WMATA Fires Metrobus Driver Who Struck Jogger

2009_0909_crash.jpg That's the word from WTOP's Adam Tuss, who reports that the specific reasons for the termination of 43-year-old Metrobus operator Carla Proctor have not been disclosed. But Proctor, who struck 30-year-old Amanda Mahnke while she was jogging near the intersection of Florida and Connecticut Avenues on Sept. 3, has indeed reportedly been let go by the transit agency. The Washington Post recently reported that Proctor had been involved in two previous, more minor on the job accidents. UPDATE 2:50 p.m. WMATA has put out a statement saying that Proctor was "dismissed for failing to follow standard operating procedures."

hmm.. sorry if this is a double post, my first attempt didn't appear. But I was saying I think you left out a key sentence from the WTOP story, unless it was updated since you first posted.

Milo Victoria, head of Metro's bus operations, tells WTOP Proctor did not do everything she could have to prevent the crash.

Whoa, Metro fired someone? Does that mean people will quit trying to pin this on the jogger?

Is that Carrefour douhe going to make a "ghost metrobus driver" memorial for awareness' sake?

Are there any updates concerning Ms. Mahnke's condition? She is most certainly entitled to her privacy, and if there haven't been any press releases regarding her condition then no worries. As a fellow DC resident and jogger, she has been in my thoughts, as well as many others' thoughts, since the accident.

I of course respect her privacy and do not mean to pry by any means. If there has been an update regarding her condition from her, her family, or the Congressman, it would be nice to know how she is doing.

newsjunkie: i second this thought. i don't think it's prying to be genuinely concerned about her well-being. i'd like to know as well. i have heard things are good, but the updates have been vague.

I've actually been wondering too because I also work for the House, and I've got a ton of sick leave that I'm not going to use and I've been wondering if she might need donated sick leave. If so, I'd be more than happy to oblige.

how can you "indeed reportedly" be let go? if it's really "indeed," do you need the "reportedly" qualifier?

I would say that plowing into a person in the streets should qualify as "failing to follow standard operating procedures."

This is a transparent attempt by WMATA to separate themselves from the driver in order to minimize any potential civil action.
