SPORTS: The U.S. Men's National Team confronts Costa Rica tonight at RFK, in a World Cup Qualifying match. The weather for tonight's game looks to be pretty bad, but it should also be an emotional match, with forward Charlie Davies out due to his terrible car accident early Tuesday morning. Fans attending tonight's game are being asked to stand and cheer for the entire 9th minute tonight in honor of #9 Davies. You can also print out a #9 to hold up during the tribute.

MUSIC: Former Mazzy Star singer Hope Sandoval and her partner, Colm Ó Cíosóig (of My Bloody Valentine), perform songs from their new album, Through the Devil Softly tonight at Sixth and I. Dirt Blue Gene opens. 8 p.m., $25.

FOOD & DRINK: Room 11 bartender Dan Searing will lead a demonstration on how to make the perfect Tom Collins tonight. The class is sponsored by Bombay Sapphire, so look for free tastings, too. 6 - 8 p.m.

MOVIE: In collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Avalon Theatre is screening Tobruck at 8 p.m. Updated from Stephen Crane’s classic novel, The Red Badge of Courage, Tobruk is set in North Africa during WWII, and exposes the romanticized idea of heroism in war when confronted with complicated relationships, the constant threat of death, and the loss of self respect.

JAZZ: Check out Fra Fra Sound, a group that started in Amsterdam 30 years ago and has since incorporated influences from the Caribbean. They're at Blues Alley tonight for 8 and 10 p.m sets. Tickets are $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

A few corrections:

-The game isn't really crucial to the US. We've qualified for the World Cup already.
-Hope Sandoval and Colm O'Someirishcrap have been making music together for about ten years, although it's understandable to think he's new since they've been pretty inactive for most of those ten years.
-Speaking of formerly inactive, Colm is still the drummer for MBV, even though they had the gall to skip DC on their mini-reunion tour.

Whew, thanks Reid! I made a couple of edits.

we're just ignoring the face-melting rocknroll at the 930 tonight, huh?

guess so. maybe you can share who that might be?

Them Crooked Vultures: Dave Grohl, Josh Homme & John Paul Jones. it's sold out, but so are lots of things DCist promotes. I heard they killed at ACL so tonight should be interesting. maybe Gustafson didn't get a ticket?

eons better than KISS. *shudder*

hmmm...i saw that a few weeks back. i recognize all the names, but haven't listened to any of their output for years. changing musical tastes and what-not.

Tonight: Zombies lurch into the DC Blogger Meetup.

Tonight is also the fundraiser for SAFE at DC9. Find out more at: http://dcsafe.org/docs/S&S_2009_v1.jpg

SAFE & Sound is an annual Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Month benefit show that raises critical funds to support SAFE's work with local domestic violence victims. SAFE (Survivors and Advocates for Empowerment) is a nonprofit organization that provides services to domestic violence survivors in the DC metro area who are dealing with the courts or the police to obtain protection from abuse.

The show is today, October 14th at DC9 (near 9th & U St. NW), featuring The Moderate, Alex Gruenburg, Celia Kipp & the Last Ditch, and Frau Eva. Doors open at 8:30pm. Tickets are $10. DC9 is just a few blocks east of the U Street/Cardozo stop on the Green line.

Domestic violence rates in DC are shockingly high for such a small jurisdiction. The MPD received 30,676 domestic-related crime calls in 2007 -- that is one every 17 minutes. But the state of the economy has meant severe budget cuts in DC -- which as has negatively impacted the DV community. With DV on on the rise and shrinking budgets --every penny counts. All funds raised by SAFE go straight to the clients, women and men who are in desperate need of emergency housing, food, and transportation to court for legal services.
