Change Out Your Smoke Detector Batteries for Free

2009_1005_smokealarm.jpg This week marks National Fire Prevention Week (and yes, the campaign has a blog). Considering the timing of Friday's fatal fire in Georgetown, it seemed a good idea to pass on word from the folks at the D.C. area Ace Hardware co-operative (Logan Hardware, Glover Park Hardware, Tenleytown and 5th Street) that they are offering to replace your smoke detector batteries this week for free. Now through Oct. 10, stop by any of the local Ace locations with your used 9-volt alkaline battery and exchange it for a new one, gratis. The stores will take care of recycling your old batteries.

mighty kind of the ace hardware folks. this is how you get people to be return customers.

What if a fire happens while you are out exchanging the smoke detector battery?
Otherwise, I like it.

I am a little confused by this. When the battery dies in your smoke detector, it makes this incredibly annoying beeping noise for months before finally conking out.

So, if your batteries need replacing then:

1) Your smoke detectors started beeping today, and you are very lucky that someone will give you a free battery at the same time

2) They have been beeping for a while, and you have an extremely high tolerance for annoying things

3) You took out the battery when they started beeping some months ago and didn't bother to replace it, in which case you are extremely lazy and/or stupid, and its doubtful that this handout will be enough to get you to Ace Hardware

I guess that its nice to raise awareness of the need to make sure your smoke detectors work, but this just seems like more PR to get people in Ace Hardware than anything else.

Weird timing---I thought we were always supposed to change the batteries when daylight savings time begins/ends.

Anyways, you can also request a free smoke detector from the fire department. http://fems.dc.gov/fems/cwp/view,a,3,q,641231,femsNav,%7C31509%7C.asp

i'm not going to fault them for good PR.

Jamie, you don't need to wait until your batteries run out to replace them. Take advantage of the opportunity and replace them preemptively.
