Based on DCist photography contributor Brian Knight's photographs, yesterday's Marine Corps Marathon was a passionate whirlwind of emotions: elation, sadness, struggle, and whimsy, all in a blur of movement and color. It's appropriate then, that such an exhausting event required an earlier-than-roosters wake-up call for our intrepid photographer -- of course, DCist managing and arts editor Heather Goss (who somehow escaped the reach of Brian's lens) just had to do him one better and actually run the 10K yesterday.

wow, the woman with the outstretched, pointing hand in the 11th picture looks less like she's cheering and more like she's accusing runner #1009 of killing a puppy.
That was actually someone who got stuck on I-395 and, after abandoning their car and walking the 10 miles to the pentagon, started flinging poo at the silly runners.
If you saw the 400mm lens Brian was using, you'd know he got a tougher work out than I did!
there was a juggling guy at the philly half marathon a few ago, too!!
Get ready next year for the first annual Run for the Cheetah, DC! You heard it here first!
Can Cougars participate?
Of course! If you've got the cash, we've got the course!!
I ran the marathon yesterday and managed to depict a different kind of suffering I endured during the race: http://georgetownrunningcompany.blogspot.com/2009/10/some-minor-mcm-casualties.html
Advice for future runners: PROTECT THE NIPS
ouch! ouch! ouch!!!
These are some great photos!
However, I think some of the captions are in poor taste. "the agony of defeat" is not entirely accurate when one completes 26.2 miles. Saying "it's not all dead serious" just a few photos after a runner has a memorial tribute on his back? Well done on the photos! Perhaps take a second look at the captions next time
You're presuming that she finished the race. If she didn't, the word "defeat" would be applicable. And the caption about the hot dog guy was completely appropriate to convey a photo about...a guy in a hot dog costume.
Perhaps take a second look at the context of the captions next time?
Thanks for the correction DreadPirateRoberts. I noticed the 10K bib on the runner behind the girl right after I posted the comment. Oops.
I applaud the photography. I did not know that the photographer and the story author were two different people. It was good work.
I just thought a "some people had lots of fun with their marathon..." could have worked a little better.
The context of the caption is running along Arlington National Cemetery and finising at the Iwo Jima Memorial.
Great photos! I applaud all those that ran the race. Thanks to DCist for working so hard to really capture the spirit of the day.
Sorry about the captions. I didn't have a chance to put anything descriptive other than, "Hey, these are photos from the MCM." Aaron did the best he could with no information.
If I remember correctly, the puking girl did finish her race, but it was the 10K, which shared a finish line with the MCM.
Where is the picture of the women's winner?
Women's winner is here!
I believe that man is known as the "Joggler". Seriously. He competes with at least one other guy to set (and reset) the world's fastest marathon whilst juggling time.
