Click Click: Lenny Kravitz @ Warner Theater

On paper, a Lenny Kravitz show on the heels of the 20th anniversary re-release of his debut album, Let Love Rule, is an intriguing prospect. Add in a setlist that has but one song released after the year 2000 and I'm downright excited. So why was Tuesday's show at the Warner Theater a bit of a dud? Pacing, mostly. Kravitz managed just 13 songs in a two hour span in a set that started and finished strong but veered eerily into "Jazz Odyssey" territory in between.

The night started off well enough. An intense version of "Freedom Train," followed by "Bring It On," the one new song in the set, and then a guitar driven "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" that put the focus on Lenny's vocals as opposed to the string melody. A rollicking "Mr. Cab Driver" was next and the crowd, all of whom were on their feet with their hands in the air, was officially approaching concert nirvana. It was then that the wheels fell off. Kravitz took a seat behind his keyboard for "Flower Child" and the crowd was treated to its first jam session of the night. Extended versions of "Believe" and "Blues For Sister Someone" soon followed, which led to the first mass sitdown/check twitter feed and baseball scores on your phone/bathroom break of the night. Kravitz went off the deep end during "Believe," saying, "I don't want to preach on you" and then rambling on about God, healing and family for the next 10 minutes. "Blues.." featured an elongated trumpet solo. 'Nuff said. Thankfully an impromptu version of "I Belong To You", requested by a fan earlier in the day over Twitter, brought the crowd back to its feet.

Only then, about 75 minutes after the concert started, was the audience rewarded with the rock hits they wanted. "Always On The Run," "American Woman," and "Fly Away" were played in quick succession, but these rock radio gems were fleeting and seemingly over before they started.

Kravitz goaded his godmother, Cicely Tyson, onstage to take a bow before the "encore," a 15 minute version on "Let Love Rule." I was trying to hold out for the inevitable "Are You Gonna Go My Way," but I had had my fill by then. So had many other attendees, as we all seemingly got up to leave at the same time.

Here's hoping for a better night when the Mama Said anniversary tour comes to town in a few years.
