DCist's October Theater Preview

Folger's Much Ado About Nothing.
October is here, so any companies still preparing to launch their fall seasons have pretty much done so. The result: lots of shows to choose from this month.

Forum Theater gives its own treatment to Tony Kushner's regarded Angels In America (Oct. 5).

If you're curious about the Four Seasons and never got the chance to check out their backstory on Broadway, look no further than the National Theatre's production of Jersey Boys (Oct. 1).

No one does gothic and dark quite like Synetic, so it'll be interesting what they've got to say with their production of Dracula (Oct. 16). Prefer a more PG-version of the classic tale? There's always Dracula: A Family Musical from Georgetown Theater Company (Oct. 17).

And speaking of Halloween-appropriate fare, cult movie fans should be interested in Landless Theatre's production of Evil Dead: The Musical (Oct. 8).

Also playing

  • Ben Jonson, meet Shakespeare Theatre. The company performs The Alchemist (Oct. 6).
  • Freud and Dali come together in RepStage's production of Hysteria (Oct. 7)
  • Constellation knows farce, and the next work it will tackle broadly is A Flea In Her Ear (Oct. 8).
  • New company Factory 449 reprises its Fringe production of 4.48 Psychosis (Oct. 8).
  • Arena's got a special event this month: On Oct 12, take in The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later.
  • Studio moves into the more absurd territory with the amusingly-named Adding Machine: A Musical (Oct. 14)
  • Olney gets environmentalist with Tree Boy (Oct. 17)
  • What if Beatrice & Benedick were in the Caribbean? Folger poses the question with Much Ado About Nothing (Oct. 21)
  • Theater J performs the Neil Simon classic Lost In Yonkers (Oct. 21).
  • Quotidian Theatre Company is back on the scene with Port Authority (Oct. 23).
  • Lots of actor and actress favorites are among the cast of Woolly Mammoth's Full Circle (Oct. 26).
  • Round House Theater performs 26 Miles from In the Heights author Quiara Alegria Hudes (Oct. 28).
  • Cate Blanchett's coming to town to perform in the Kennedy Center's A Streetcar Named Desire (Oct. 29)
  • If you missed Hedwig And The Angry Inch's brief performance earlier this year, catch the reprise on Halloween Weekend (Oct. 30).
  • New theater company The Hub performs We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! in Falls Church (Oct. 30).

Still Playing:
This weekend marks the end for 1st Stage's The Game of Love and Chance and Round House's new production of The Picture of Dorian Gray; American Century's A Piece of My Heart and Taffety Punk's Measure For Measure close Oct. 10; Heritage Theater Companies' A Touch of the Poet, Arena Stage's tragic The Quality of Life, Studio's obscure Moonlight, and Ford's Theater's Black Pearl Sings all bow the Oct. 18 weekend; you've until Oct. 25 to see Olney's Night Must Fall; and both MetroStage's Musical of Musicals: The Musical and Toby's Sweeney Todd.

quasi-theatre related (ok, not really but...):

Bentzen Ball comedy festival Oct 22-25

I was at the snazzy Mayflower Hotel First Thursday soiree eating fancy food and drinking bottomless Dogtoberfest last night and the Flying Dog rep said they were co-sponsoring.

In other news, slow news day huh?

forum has PWYC previews this weekend for angels, but it looks like you can only get tickets an hour before showtime.
