Education Journal Dubs Michelle Rhee D.C.'s 'Braveheart'

2009_1014_rheebrave2.jpg Surely even Michelle Rhee must feel like her profile is way overblown after this. The journal Education Next, as part of its entry in the virtual parade of profile articles that've already been done on the D.C. Schools chancellor, has created this ridiculous graphic depicting Rhee as a knight in shining armor (City Desk also takes note).

The headline heralds her as "D.C.’s Braveheart," which is an intriguing comparison considering Scottish hero William Wallace was eventually executed for treason. Who is the King of England in this scenario? Vince Gray? The voters?

There's nothing much new in the article itself, but we say add this one to the Time magazine/broom file.

What? She didn't get a Nobel Prize yet? They are giving them out like candy!

Okay. Fenty really needs to borrow her PR people

Whomever cooked this up is hysterical - I want to have a beer with them. I would also love to see a portrait of Monkey in armor, for obvious reasons.

I was thinking more Joan-of-Arc for her heresy against the all-powerful teacher's union etc. That or her butch drag king style!

how about king arthur? not richard burton king arthur, but graham chapman king arthur.

i think i just threw up in my mouth.

If anyone needs to be disemboweled for treason it should be the leadership of the Washington Teachers Union and any school administrator with "Deputy Assistant to the Assistant Deputy" in his/her title.

"You can take my intestines but you can not take MY TENURE!"

Oh, this is a conundrum. I don't care for the local teachers' union, but I hated "Braveheart" even before Mel Gibson lost his marbles. Can I root for Rhee to be replaced by a new chancellor who will treat the WTU like Liam Neeson treated Tim Roth in "Rob Roy"? That was a much better Scottish nationalist film of 1995.

Her ego Rhee-ly needs to be taken down a couple of pegs, and this crap isn't helping matters.

Bragging about how much money spent per pupil is a horrible way to measure effective resource distribution. In fact, I think it speaks more to fiscal mismanagement. As a high school teacher, I spend upwards $200 a year on online software the in when I taught at Montgomery County was not only provided to us for free, but expected that we use daily (brainpop, oncoursesystems, snapgrades, etc). Keep in mind, that much of the expenditures goes to utilities. Utilities on schools that are vacant because Rhee closed. I now work at Fletcher-Johnson which sat vacant for about 2 years... get this, you can't turn off the lights! Our tax dollars have kept this building well lit 24 hours a day for several years. Also, many of the Public Charter Schools are benefiting from this expenditure given that as part of the rental agreements for them to use DCPS facilities, we still pay the bills. Though Rhee has inherited many of these issues and wastes of money, what is she doing about it except complain that she can;t change it. Where are my tax dollars going? I would like input in where my hundereds of dollars go every month! I would like my money to go to rebuilding H.D. Woodson rather than paying for electricity, water, gas, internet, and cable for vacant buildings.

Please take the time to read where our $14,000 per pupil goes. http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/display.php?id=34603
