What are they building in there? HBO's Cube takes shape.
Imagine is meant to be, according to a press release from the cable network, "an expression and embodiment of the HBO philosophy — to be the preeminent source of entertainment experiences that change perspectives, defy expectations and challenge the status quo." The project has been assembled by an ad agency, BBDO, and in addition to an interactive web experience, includes the Cube, a traveling 16x16 foot, four sided movie screen. Two 2-minute films, each shot from four different perspectives, are shown in rotation. Each perspective is projected simultaneously on each of the four screens, so viewers can only get the full story of the films by moving around the cube and watching from all sides.
The Cube already made appearances in New York and Philadelphia prior to D.C.'s turn, which lasts from tomorrow through Saturday. Conceptually, this sounds like the sort of installation that might have fit right in during last year's fantastic Cinema Effect exhibit at the Hirshhorn. At the very least, it should give the weekend partiers something to drunkenly gawk at while trying to hail a cab in Adams Morgan.

Hmm...wonder how long before some NIMBY/stuck up DC resident protests and has it taken down??
NIMBY/stuck-up resident? You're thinking of upper NW. People in Adams Morgan are much more laid-back, except for the idiots that bought million dollar condos over bars and now complain about the noise...
Local "youts" will tear that sucker down before the NIMBYs even have a chance to call the Grahamstander's office.
What's the over/under on how many Friday night drunks urinate or vomit on the cube?

If that's the line, I'll take the over.
Just to clarify: does the drunk have to defile all four sides? 'Cause that takes a bit more talent.
Nope. Just standard peeing and spewing chunks. If someone can get all six sides, that person should get free taxi rides for a year.
Okay, had to re-read. This "cube" only has four sides, rather than the standard six sides. So maybe that's worth only free bus rides for a week.
I don't think you need to be particularly cynical to consider this an advertisement. Considering "The project has been assembled by an ad agency, BBDO" to be "an expression and embodiment of the HBO philosophy."
In principle, I have not problem with the commercial/public art. It's a trend that I think more cities should adopt. I am also a fan of temporary public art.
I for one, call for a 1980's HBO theme song flashmob dance on Columbia Rd. Who's comin' with me?
