Morning Roundup: Gulps and Gasps Edition

Good morning, D.C., and welcome back to your regularly scheduled, uninterrupted by obscure holidays, no longer irritated by three-day-long Metro closures life. That all sounds pleasant enough, though it also means you're definitely back at work now, which is decidedly less nice. So, let's see, what could cheer us all up ... any funny headlines? Ehh, no, not really. But here's something good, from the Capital Weather Gang: "Forecast: Today Brings Best Weather of Week"! So today is awesome. Heck yeah! For the time being, though, we will completely ignore the flipside of this forecast, which is that it really means the rest of the week is going to be cold and damp. Live in the moment, Washington.

Deeds, McDonnell Face Off on Live TV: Virginia's two candidates for governor, Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds, met in Richmond last night for a live, televised debate. The Examiner writes that Deeds "tried to defuse criticisms over his inelegant, stammering speech patterns, which were on display throughout the debate." The Washington Times, meanwhile, emphasizes how Deeds called McDonnell a liar, which the Republican found "to be below the dignity of a gubernatorial campaign."

Marion Barry Leaves Hospital: Former mayor and Ward 8 D.C. Council member Marion Barry left Howard University Hospital on Monday, presumably now fully hydrated. Here's the statement he released via a spokesperson: "I would like to first thank God for giving me the strength to rise above. By his grace, and the wonderful work of my doctors and the staff at Howard University Hospital, I am able to address my health issues more effectively. Nearly 8 months after receiving a new kidney, I am feeling very well and I am ready to get back to work. I thank the residents of the District for their love, concern, and many prayers."

Chief Rubin Takes Responsibility for Sprinkler Demo Disaster: WUSA9 stays on the D.C. Fire/EMS sprinkler demo foul up that left one firefighter burned last week. Reporter Dave Statter notes that Rubin hasn't been made available to speak with him, but did do a podcast with Ed Comeau of Campus-Firewatch.com. 'Chief Rubin told Comeau it "looked like a comedy act." The chief said he took for granted that the requirements outlined in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for such burns had been followed. Instead the chief discovered there was no safety officer for the event and that a briefing with the firefighters had not been conducted prior to the burn.'

Briefly Noted: D.C. Police Chief freezes hires in the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit ... D.C. gas customers facing a monthly surcharge ... D.C. store clerk shot while trying to assist customer who was being robbed ... Md. boy struck, killed by Amtrak train ... Man attacks George Washington University grad student with a hammer.

This Day in DCist: In 2008, Mt. Pleasant was thinking about a new approach to residential parking, and in 2006, we wondered who was crazier more eccentric, Gilbert Arenas or Clinton Portis?

Congratulations on Marion Barry's recovery. With a little luck and a new reduced-baby diet, he'll provide generations of new DC transplants years of facepalms, shrugs, and headscratchings as to why the f**k this relic is still around.

Also, is anyone else getting "HTTP 500 - Internal server error" when they post? Because posting works fine via the mobile site, but the main site is FUBAR.

A lot of the stories from the past few days come up blank when you click on them. The site is pretty messed up.

I blame Barry, Cantoe, and illegal immigrants.

I'm getting errors all over DCist. Waaaahhhhhhhhh!!!

Get back in the waaahmbulance, Liz.

If you're having problems posting comments, shoot me an email at sommer@dcist.com and let me know exactly what happens.

Or, you know, we could complain here.

Of course, if we can complain here, I'm guessing the problem's fixed.

Get back to work, Sommer!

I'd like to complain about people who hold things up by complaining about people complaining. It's about time something was done about it.

[Sixteen-ton weight falls on him]

THAT is how you disarm a monkey attacking you with a banana!

You will now EAT the banana, thus rendering him HELPLESS!

The server errors this morning had me angrier than Janet Reno's blind date. So yeah, I was angry.

That WJLA store clerk story is ridiculous: 1) Where the hell did it occur? do I have to google-map Price's Grocery to find out? 2) (related) where the hell did that occur that a guy could shoot someone, run out of the store, carjack someone, CRASH THE CAR, and GET AWAY ON FOOT!?!?! Clearly there were witnesses EVERYWHERE and yet the gunmen is still at large??? 3) get their copyeditor some !@#$% coffee for chrissakes!

facepalms #2, 3, and 4 of the morning roundup (#1 being for the illustrious council member from Ward 8, of course)

Look, this is DC. Snitches not only get stitches, they get driven over and left for dead. It's also gotten so tough for criminals, they've resorted to bike-by executions.

Also, props to Clinton Price Jr for doing what was right despite the obvious danger. Hopefully, he and the woman he stuck up for have a speedy recovery. Too bad he didn't get a good swing or two at the perp, that would have been real justice.

Also, if he needs an organ transplant later due to his injuries, I can only presume a certain recent organ recipient will be right there to champion his cause.

sorry, marion, i wasn't praying for you.

And yet you still pray for that dead squirrel you found in the middle of the road. You're everything that's wrong with America. You and Marion Barry. Just for that, I hope that squirrel comes back from the dead to eat your nuts.

"...freezes hires in the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit..."

So I guess we are talking shrinkage and hard nipples?
