Morning Roundup: Left Out in the Cold Edition

Good morning, Washington. Something rather like winter has suddenly and prematurely arrived in the District, blocking out the sun, fogging up our windows, chilling our previously pleasant walks to the Metro, and ruining our shoes. Not to mention seemingly knocking out power to a large swath of upper Northwest D.C. and Silver Spring. And this cold, wet nonsense is apparently expected to linger well through Sunday. Pardon me while I speak to my publisher about reviving Miamist ...

D.C. Pledges to House Homeless This Winter: The Post's Darryl Fears files another story this morning on the ongoing confusion surrounding funding for the city's homeless shelters. Human Services Director Clarence Carter appeared before a D.C. Council committee Wednesday, where he once again promised that there would be adequate space for D.C.'s entire homeless population through spring. Council members were frustrated and skeptical, and shelter operators have been worried for weeks now ever since the city abruptly announced large cuts to critical social services groups.

Cheh Pushes for Faster FOIAs: Ward 3 Council member Mary Cheh is drafting legislation that would force D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles to quit stonewalling on freedom of information requests, the Washington Times reports. "Mrs. Cheh, Ward 3 Democrat, said she has heard numerous complaints that suggest D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles is not properly executing the duties of his position as a public official." For his part, Nickles claims certain individuals are "abusing open government laws and preventing the government from responding to legitimate requests."

Briefly Noted: Hundreds wait in line for H1N1 vaccine in Montgomery County ... D.C. public charter school enrollment is up ... Two Potomac teens charged with murder in beating death ... D.C. sniper's attorney plans clemency plea to governor.

This Day in DCist: In 2008, WMATA announced it was introducing more Metrobus express routes, and in 2007, the District revised its dog park rules.

I'm totally digging that pic!

The differing colors aren't seen too often. I like it as well. Especially since it makes the gravel ground on the Mall look almost gold-ish.

Oh boo f**king hoo. Anybody else tired of Nickles whining about having to do his f**king JOB? Answering FOIA requests is part of your job description. Get more staff or STFU. We've seen this movie before and it still sucks. It's one of those poorly-written dramadies where the protagonist (the soulful millionaire/the soulful poor guy/the robot with a soul) woos his lady love (the spunky divorcee/the spunky geriatric/Jennifer Aniston playing a spunk-dodging 20-year-old version of herself) with the help of his plucky sidekick (the widow's wisecracking kid/the Funky Phantom/the talking dog voiced by Bruce Willis), all the while, "Salisbury Hill" is droning on in the background. It's basically every Hugh Grant movie ever made, with the exception of the Divine Brown sex tape, and that doesn't even count because they couldn't get Hugh Grant and instead got some porn guy name Huge Grant. It's not even funny. The world could use a lot less of Peter Nickles stonewalling and "Salisbury Hill" and more interracial porn.

Yeah, Winter may be in the air, but it's always Spring IN MY PANTS.

Listen, give Nickles a break. It takes time and effort to edit out or 'lose' all the stuff that incriminates DC government officials in the documents/tapes his office controls.

speaking of miamist (miamiist?), it's been a long time since gothamist expanded into a new city. it really seems like there muct be enough youg, tech-saavy people in some other cities to open a new branch. like atlantaist or triangleist. heard anything?

I find it interesting that Bostonist and Chicagoist are pretty much dead as far as comments go.

I'm pretty sure of all the WTFeverist sites, DC and NYC have the most posters. Shanghai and London are about as dead as Boston and Chicago. I'm sure a Sydneyist would do gangbusters. Those Australians cant STFU about how great things are in Australia.

SFist can be good. Just toss out a few pro-gun, anti-bike, anti-gay marriage trolls and sit back and watch the fun.

"Dear Penthouse Forum. You won't believe this, but it was a dark and stormy night and I was driving my Nissan Apocalypse down Lombard Street, stroking my .357 Python and wondering when these gay bikers would get out of my way..."

I remember years ago (before The Onion) reading about the Editor of Penthouse Forum being fired from his job. When asked for comment, he said "I never thought this would happen to me."

And middle aged women fighting on their buses. That thread was Molly-esque in its comments.

Honestly, I don't think there would be much on Her Majesty's Prison Colonyist worth reading.

Chicagoist still seems like it's way more active than Phillyist. But I guess that's mostly because Philly sucks.

Yes, I'm sure Scottsdaleist would be a great success.

Come on - October is a great month! Fall colors, more humane temperatures, Halloween, new fiscal year...

The only thing that stinks about this time of year (aside from the rain, which seems to be the defining characteristic of both fall and winter in this area) is that its not actually cold out, and yet Metro feels the need to crank the heat on the trains, recreating the sauna commute of summer.

Eh. It's dark when I get up, it's dark when I get home.
Bring back the sunshine and steel drums!

Uh, it's friggin 45 degrees outside - sorry buddy, that's pretty damn cold. Especially for Autumn, when it's supposed to be in the 60s.

Dude. Whenever the fed investigators are done with the taxicab commission, when are they going to get to the Public Service Commission?

The rate of blackouts in DC is way beyond acceptable for the weather, and the sheer number of per-capita transformer and manhole explosions beggars belief. Leaving aside the sheer number of DC Council ordinances Pepco simply doesn't comply with.
