Good morning, Washington, and welcome to Gay Marriage Tuesday, the big day when At-large D.C. Council member David Catania will co-introduce with nine of his colleagues a bill to legalize same-sex marriages in the District. The John A. Wilson Building may well be jumping this morning, though a hearing date for the bill has yet to be announced, and the Council won't make a final vote on it until the end of the year. In the Post, Tim Craig writes that even though passage through the Council is all but assured and it does appear that this Congress will most likely let it become law, "even if same-sex couples start marrying next year, the long-term survival of the practice would be in doubt for years, depending on the makeup of the House and Senate, congressional officials said."

Metrobus Driver Strikes Pedestrian on Mt. Olivet Rd. NE A Metrobus driver struck a woman as she was exiting another bus in the Trinidad area at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening. The woman had just exited a D8 Metrobus on Mt. Olivet Road NE between Trinidad and Montello Avenues, and it appears she was attempting to cross the street in front of that bus when the driver of a second bus heading in the same direction struck her down. D.C. Fire/EMS say the woman was taken to Washington Hospital Center with life-threatening injuries. And as the Post writes, there were witnesses: 'Two men who said they witnessed the incident told television stations that the woman was thrown a distance down the street, and appeared to be unconscious after being struck. One of the men said that after the woman was hit, the driver of one of the buses "got down" and prayed.' This comes on the heels of a similar accident at Connecticut and Florida Avenues a month ago, when jogger Amanda Mahnke was struck and seriously injured by a Metrobus driver, who has since been fired. The driver in Monday's incident has been placed on leave pending an investigation and routine drug and alcohol testing.

Graham Keeps Taxicab Oversight: D.C. Council Chair Vince Gray said on Monday that Jim Graham will remain in his spot as the chairman of the public works and transportation committee, which oversees all taxicab-related legislation, Michael Neibauer reports in the Examiner. "Graham is neither a target nor a person of interest in the investigation, Gray said." There's also this morsel at the bottom of the story: Graham, Tommy Wells, Kwame Brown and Phil Mendelson have all apparently returned $400 campaign contributions they received from United Fleet Management's Causton Toney, the former D.C. Taxicab Commission chairman who was one of those indicted in the federal bribery probe. Related, the Post also covers the taxicab defendants' day in court on Monday.

Briefly Noted: Fatal shooting on Benning Rd. NE ... District files to take over two homes for the mentally disabled ... Marion Barry comes down hard on Michelle Rhee, asks for probe into DCPS layoffs ... Roads reopen after hydrogen fueling station leak.

Yet another red line tragedy. WTF. Good lord metro is a mess. One would think in a city with some of the brightest people someone could figure out how to fix that place.

look at this wapo editorial. barry also basically told white people who don't live west of rock creek that they can basically go fuck themselves if they want city services.

The best part is that he told told white people who do live west of Rock Creek that they can suck his d**k.

As one of those who is apparently fucking himself, it's good to know that Barry is looking out for my interests.

Be fair. He said that white (and, apparently, Asian) people who live east of Rock Creek can go f' themselves if they want services from the Department of Parks and Recreation. He didn't rule out the possibility that it might be acceptable for them to use some other city services. So hold out hope, white and Asian residents! Marion Barry might believe it's okay for you to ask something of the Advisory Committee on Anesthesiologist Assistants!

cminus: you're right, i shouldn't twist the words of the city's longest-serving bigot, while he's in the hospital. shame on my non-black self.

I hate to say it, but I'm in the mood for a good austermuhling.

If you think DC's streets are a bloodbath of Peckinpaghian proportions, just waint until Mary Cheh Gets rid of all the speed bumps in town. In addition to being in bed with the CHUD and Morlock lobby, Mary Cheh continues to function as an apologist for lunatic suburban drivers, well known to be the Devil incarnate. Speed bumps, like "Deaf Child," "Baby on Board," and "Under New Management" signs, are proven to have saved billions of lives every year. Yet Mary Cheh, along with her subterranean cannibal and trogladyte overlords from the future, want to wind the clock back to that ghastly time when people payed attention to speed limits and Klingle Valley was the exclusive dominion of the horse and buggy carriage trade. Now, it's it's a decrepit culvert fit only for hobos, lepers, and suprise-suprise...CHUDs who've had their drivers licenses suspended. Why does Mary Cheh hate streetlights, safety, and our children? Why does she want to get rid of speed bumps and plunge the earth into a Second Darkness?

I'll tell you why. Something festers in the heart of Ward 3. Something that you have failed to see. But the Great Goatse has seen it. His Brown Eye penetrates stone, air, flesh, and press releases. Even now, he presses his advantage. You are all going to die! Slowly, and it's going to smell really bad! What is the City Council but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek and their brats roll on the floor with the dogs? The victory of the Insurance Claims Consumer Protection Amendment Act of 2009 does not belong to you, Cheh CHUDmaster! You are a lesser daughter of greater sires!

the fact is, looking at things right now, i would still guess that mary cheh is the least corrupt of all council members.

Yup. When given the choice between corrupt and stupid, choose stupid. Unless you're stupid, in which case, choose Jif.

This reminds me of the old Virginia Woolf quote, "Bi, gay, straight...too bad there aren't any good choices."

Let's give Tommy Wells a little credit, IMGoph. I'm not sure he's bright enough to knowingly be corrupt.

dj: you're right. my apologies to mr. wells. i guess that i didn't even think about him because he's done such a good job of staying under the council radar, where you usually only make the news if you really screw something up.

Indeed...I think someone likened him to Fredo Corleone last week. I can't think of one better comparison. Now if he could only engage in shady dealings with one of the "b*tches" who "set" Marion Barry "up"...wait a minute, that wouldn't work. Barry's like the Bizarro Michael Corleone. The guy's freaking teflon, and he'd sniff out a plot against him like a vat of Mambo Sauce. Then Tommy'd be capped by Mendo while on a fishing trip. Or something.

Michael Corleone: Fenty

Sonny Corleone: Barry

Fredo Corleone: Tommy "Tommy" Wells

Tom Hagan: Mendelson

I was on a Red Line train towards Glenmont just before 9am and the driver definitely said there was a FIRE under a train on the opposite side of the tracks. Not smoke. Fire.

Why all the hate towards Ward 3? It is a very diverse neighborhood. They have doctors AND lawyers living there.

Cheh drives me nuts with her hypocritical "Ward 3 liberal" values (e.g. "We support the common man, as long as they stay out of Ward 3"). I have no doubt she will be re-elected.

I do like her election reform proposal, however.

Hey now...I'm a downtrodden Ward 3 resident, and I completely resent the insinuation that Ward 3 is full of rich whiteys...Dr. Honky McWhitey and Whitey McCracker, Esq., to name a few.

You're underestimating the diversity of Ward 3...there are also therapists, dentists and CPAs (like yours truly) living in my hood. And as far as the rich whitey thing goes?? Well, I'll have you know that I only have the ONE Jaguar. AND...it's in the SHOP right now, Mr. NewHCE!

If your Jag was NOT in the shop (that would be news)!
They suck...

Indeed...if only my comments were true and not snark ridden. I'll keep rollin my 01 Saturn like a champ.

I thought local laws required your drive a Prius.

Anyone know what the deal was with all the cops hanging out on the TR Bridge this morning?

Maybe Nats Teddy was depressed after yet another futile season?

Just make anything west of Rock Creek part of PG County. That will solve ALL the problems this city has (SARCASM)...

Maybe if Ward 8 had someone smart enough to actually run against the former crack smoker in chief, we wouldn't get this kind of pathetic race baiting from either side.

it does. charles wilson did last time around. unfortunately, he got destroyed.
