Same-Sex Marriage Hearing Kicks Off

2009_1026_hearing.jpg The D.C. Council Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary's hearing on the same-sex marriage bill is going on now, and you can watch it live online.

Today's hearing has 100 speakers scheduled to testify for 3 minutes apiece, and will continue on Monday, Nov. 2, when another 168 people are scheduled to speak.

And so it begins...I trust they're checking that these people haven't been bused in...

I've watched all the speakers so far, and the breakdown is as follows:

- Supporters of the legislation speak of love and equality.
- Opponents of the legislation speak of how angry they are.

It's really not helping the anti-same-sex marriage folks.

I think I may strain my eyes from rolling them too much at some of this testimony.

This is absolutely insane. I suppose, though, that everyone has the right to seek redress. So be it.

Jeez. Bishop Jackson was the most reasonable sounding guy on the opposition.

Smart move. He must have been reading the opposition, which wants to paint him as a lunatic. Nothing like conforming to the stereotype to sink your message!

What's truly amazing is that all of these people who were screaming about DC Voting Rights and self-governance were also saying they'd be the first to line up on Capital Hill seeking Congressional intervention on this measure. So you want to have full-control over the city as long as it suits you? When the city doesn't do what you want it to than you think it's okay to run to Congress to suck their teets? Shameless sellouts!

No amount of rhetoric or Jerry Spring-esque emotional outbursts can hide what's really at issue here--it's not about voting rights, it's not about letting the people have their say, it's about nothing more than a very real and very transparent sense of hatred and intolerance. None of these people wants to be labeled a bigot and so they all swear up and down that it's just about a vote... even though we didn't vote on the $7M stadium or the appointing of Fenty's cronies and frat buddies...

And how dare the Archdiocese of DC get up there and say they wont provide any services to gay citizens and threaten the Council with a mysterious "Plan B"--all the while stuffing their coffers full of public money and charitable contributions from their gay members!

These people are all are shamelss and ignorant. I have more respect for those who get up and at least admit their hatred openly, and tell the truth about why they don't want gay marriage. These people who try to mask the same feelings under some false loving guise are just sick!

+1 tell me how you really feel (seriously, agreed 100%)
