DCist spotted this small protest against sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan moving through the streets around McPherson Square a little after 4:30 this afternoon. There looked to about 75 people marching in total, though the number of official police escorts, many of them on bicycles, easily rivaled the protesters' numbers. The marchers were banging drums and chanting, but appeared totally peaceful, so just keep an eye out for related traffic disruptions on your way home this evening.

They're just mad they don't have jobs.
There are jobs in Afghanistan...potentially 50,000 more. Better yet, its relevant to their issue too!
So... according to these hemp-wearing friends of ours, we should leave an unprepared and unstable country to be taken over once again by the Taliban?
I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it! LET'S DO IT!
I wonder what these 75 people think about the destruction of the giant Buddhas by the Taliban?
This is really your idea of something that should shame the protestors? Seriously, in comparison to all the other evil shit the Taliban pulled the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas was just a thin layer of icing on the cake.
That said, claiming that people opposed to war in Afghanistan are therefore pro-Taliban is the same kind of bullshit logical fallacy that was thrown around all the time about Iraq: anyone anti-war was depicted as somehow "pro-Saddam." Wasn't true then, isn't true now.
Nate I think Monkey has a valid point. Destruction of priceless artifacts based on their closed-minded interpretation of a religious idea speaks volumes about this group. You are correct it is but one thing, but it is an indication of serious systemic flaws in this group.
Sorry, hillvada has a valid point.
Man, I miss Chief Ramsey. He'd have these clowns rounded up in Pershing Park so fast it'd make their ACLU lawyers' heads spin. 'Course, you'd have the inevitable wrongful arrest lawsuit, but at least you'd have the satisfaction of knowing these stinking hippies aren't confronting you with ugly truths about your super magical black dude POTUS. Like the fact that nobody, including Alexander the Great, has ever successfully conquered and pacified Afghanistan. You'd figure we would have learned from TWO British incursions and uncounted Russian ones that this $h!t don't work. Hell, you even got Princess Bride telling you this is a mistake. But f**k, we're Amerikuns, by the grace of God! Anyway, what's Ramsey up to anyway? I heard he's swabbing the crapper in some rest stop off the Jersey Turnpike. Coulda swore I saw him hosing off pee stains at James Fenimore Cooper.
You probably knew this, but just in case ... Ramsey is Phillyist's problem now, as he is currently the Chief of Police in that fair city.
I saw them in Thomas Circle - lots of cops on bikes and a tiny clump of protesters; about what you see when a foreign leader is here and the exile community is ticked. No signs to identify themselves, but there was someone with a pink umbrella, which usually means there's some asshattery involved. 14th was mightily screwed; I beat the Circulator on foot from I to R.
Sure, 75 people. You're obviously part of the conspiracy to suppress the true numbers. I'm assured that ABC reported there were more than a million protesters there.
Ah, yes, a conspiracist!
Dcist also knows who shot Kennedy, what really happened on 9/11, how many licks it takes to get to the center of Marion Barry's whore, where President Obama's real birth certificate is located, and the exact location of Osama bin Laden. But shhh, don't tell--WaPo might get jealous.
The demonstration was the 8th iteration of Funk The War, a roving street party protest, which was sponsored by the DC chapter of Students for Democratic Society. The demonstration was comprised of mostly DC area high school students who do not want taxpayer money, that could be spent on their education, being used to continue the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. You can make fun of them all you want, but at least they were empowered enough to make a political statement on the 8th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan.
It wasn't an invasion! We were invited! Punch was served! Check with Poland!
Reinstate the draft? Watch umemployment among youngsters plummet...you realize the draft was the ultimate gov't jobs program.
So... according to these hemp-wearing friends of ours, we should leave an unprepared and unstable country to be taken over once again by the Taliban?
I think that is the idea.
who do not want taxpayer money, that could be spent on their education
why does it always come down to personal greed.. they don't care about the war, they want free money for school.
The group first gathered at the military recruiting office on 14th & L, which one of the peaceful protesters had earlier sprayed with red paint balls. Building maintenance, not the recruiters, was still scrubbing the paint off the walls this morning.
Wow, most of these comments are quite mean-spirited and a bit, um, fascist. I guess it's to be expected that people who most likely make their living in government or its many "private sector" auxiliaries would be personally offended by anti-war protests--and that such people wouldn't miss an opportunity to pull rank on some kids for not being Serious Businessmen. Thanks for making me glad I no longer live in DC, dudes!
