Ted Loza is No Longer D.C.?

This ad featuring embattled Jim Graham staffer Ted Loza was recently removed from DC Vote's web site.
When D.C. voting rights advocacy organization DC Vote launched its "I Am DC" ad campaign earlier this summer, it placed posters featuring the faces and stories of 10 D.C. residents (including our own Martin Austermuhle) on Metrobuses and other visible spots around the city. But recently we noticed that images of the posters available for download on the DC Vote web site now number only nine. Who was on that 10th poster? It was embattled Jim Graham chief of staff Ted Loza.

"We recently made the decision to take down the ad from our Web site while the situation is pending," said DC Vote spokesperson Jaline Quinto. That situation, of course, is Loza's recent arrest and indictment on federal bribery charges in connection to a massive investigation into corruption within the D.C. taxicab industry.

DC Vote's ad buy with Metro ended at the end of September, so the physical posters are long gone, and Quinto said DC Vote didn't make any special effort to remove or recall them in the wake of the scandal, even though the Loza story broke on Sept. 24.

"All the posters from the campaign ran for the full month and then were removed and returned to us," Quinto said.

first, bravo on you guys for noticing that ted loza was on that ad campaign. i didn't see any other news agency point that fact out (city paper, wapo, etc.)

that brings us to my second point—that clearly shows just how ineffective that ad campaign was. if people actually paid attention to it or were moved by it, you'd think more people would have noticed that sooner. guess that wasn't the case.

and finally, i find it hard to believe that they got all the ads down from wmata buses, etc. there have been SO MANY ad campaigns whose signage i've seen on wmata buses 4, 5, 6, and more months after the date they were shilling had long since past. something tells me there's still a ted loza head floating out there on a U8 bus somewhere...

And if anyone happens to find one, take a photo and send it immediately to sommer@dcist.com!

Jeezus. Ted Loza has a price on his head? Never mind, just get me a glass of hot fat. And bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia while you're out there.

Sommer, Queen of Hearts - "Remember what the Dormouse said!"

My thing on the ad campaign is that they started it in August when congress was out of session. I didn't understand that.

Lozo is a city technocrat who used his position to line his own pockets. In that regard, he is "so DC."

Not a technocrat, as he was more flak than hack. Tho it appears his crime was to be overly cozy with hacks.

I noticed this recently and was going to write a blog entry about it, but you beat me to it. I did, however, download a copy of the original PDF before it was removed by DC Vote. You can download the Ted Loza ad here:

Thanks Nikolas, we were having a hard time finding a copy of the ad itself. I'm going to add this to the post.

Ted Loza is DC as much as Marion Barry or Hariette Walters is DC.

Exactly. I don't see the problem here. Truth in advertising.

I also don't like his "I support illegal immigration, so give us the vote" message."

and nice job on this sommer

Instead of "I Demand the Vote" he should be saying "I Demand You Get a Late Term Abortion."

This guy is so DC: a manipulative, corrupt insider with an ambiguous relationship to his boss. All he needs is a crackpipe and a series of drunken escapades with interns at the taxpayers expense, followed by an acceptance of Christ as his personal savior and repeated claims that his political enemies "got me like Jesus." Never get tired of that.

All he needs is a new kidney and he'll be GOLD!

Anyone else find it odd that at least 2 of the 10 people on the posters demanding the vote wouldn't be able to vote?

So, 10 DC residents, 2 of whom are non-citizens, and wouldn't be represented even if we did have representation? What, they couldn't find 10 US citizens who would ACTUALLY be represented?

Yes, we appreciate the support of those who are not DC residents and citizens, but it seems awfully odd to show non-citizens as the face of the disenfranchised.

As one of the non-citizens featured in the ads, I find my own inclusion somewhat funny, though I think the wording of my ad made a basic point that still stands -- the U.S. advocates for democracy abroad, so other countries should likewise advocate for democracy in the U.S.

And from what I understand Loza was going through the long process towards gaining citizenship. As someone who is looking to start the process myself, I can say how damn complex and time-consuming it is.

That whole required militia service thing catch up to you, huh.

As I said, we appreciate the support. We NEED the support. But still, it really does seem to me that in a campaign purporting to show the disenfranchised, one should show the disenfranchised.

And yeah, it's a stupidly long road to citizenship. Best of luck.

The ad campaign was as well thought out as anything DC Vote does. Take that however you want.

The best part about the ad is how his dead, abortion-forcing eyes follow you. Eerie.

"I am DC, now let's get a burrito and an abortion."

I love it when you talk dirty. Oh crap, now I'm craving guacamole.

I think I just dulce de leche'd in my pants.

Do we have to get abortions? I had one for lunch.
