USMNT's Charlie Davies Injured in Parkway Collision

2009_1013_davies.jpg Wire reports now confirm that a fatal early-morning car accident on the GW Parkway did indeed involve U.S. Men's National soccer team forward Charlie Davies. Davies was not behind the wheel at the time of the accident. WTOP reported that the collision, which occurred at about 3:15 a.m., claimed at least one fatality and seriously injured two others. One look at the car involved in the wreck, and it's understandable that Davies' injuries -- which have required hours of surgery -- are being described as "possibly career-threatening." (Although as of 5 p.m., the U.S. Soccer Federation is backing off of that assessment, calling the effect of Davies' injuries on his future "unclear.") Steve Goff's SoccerInsider twitter account first reported the news, and confirmed that Davies, who is still under the knife, did not suffer "life threatening" injuries.

Davies, who is considered one of the national team's brightest young players, currently plays in France's Ligue 1 with FC Sochaux, where he has two goals in six games so far this season. In but 17 career appearances with the U.S. senior team, Davies has scored four goals, including a memorable tally earlier this year against Mexico. A regular first-choice selection for coach Bob Bradley, any sort of long-term injury to Davies would be a big blow for the U.S., coming right on the heels of qualifying for the World Cup.

The U.S. Men's National team is in town for their final World Cup Qualifying match tomorrow against Costa Rica at RFK.

probably the baddest fwd we have.

Hopefully he makes a full recovery and can get back on the pitch soon.

My heart aches for the family of the young woman who died in the accident. Today was a sad, violent day in our area.
