Big Shake-Up at Washington Times

2009_1109_times.jpg Looks like there's been a major change in leadership over the weekend at the Washington Times. This morning, the paper put out a news release announcing that President and publisher Thomas McDevitt, CFO Keith Cooperrider and Chairman Dong Moon Joo have all been fired, while former VP Jonathan Slevin has been named Acting President and Publisher. The news comes less than a month after the Rev. Sun Myung Moon handed over day-to-day control of the Unification Church, which owns the Times, to his three sons.

Over at Politico, Michael Calderone reports that senior editors are being briefed this morning by members of the paper’s Board, only without executive editor John Solomon, leading to speculation that there could be more changes in store on the editorial side.

With a name like Chairman Dong Moon Joo, he should seriously consider a career as either a Korean-Hebrew Bond villain or a pornstar astronomer.

so—will they be leaning further to the right then?

I hear that the kids are more concerned with their trust funds than the cult's political standing, so they're likely to be open to any change that might stop the bleeding, whether it involves going further right or back towards the center.

Fun factoids: the Washington Times's circulation is about half that of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, about two-thirds that of La Opinion de Los Angeles, about three-quarters that of the Times of Northwest Indiana, and slightly smaller than that of the South Bend Tribune.

I'd heard that Reverend Moon didn't want a Joo running his newspaper. I guess it's true.

It's spelled Joo, but pronounced throat-warbler-mangrove.
