A fire broke out this morning inside an Indian restaurant in the 1700 block of L Street NW, leading to the evacuation of several nearby buildings.
The fire at I-The Indian Experience, located at 1708 L Street NW, began in the kitchen and extended to some duct work, D.C. Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer said. Firefighters were called to the scene for a report of smoke conditions, and evacuations began after the smoke spread through the ducts of several interconnected buildings, reaching all the way to the roof. Fire crews remain on the scene, and traffic is backed up in the area. No injuries have been reported.

I blame Peggy Cooper Cafritz. Will no one stop this lint-burning menace?
Will this affect my ability to get lunch or dinner at Naan & Beyond?! Oh noes!
Flaming cars in Fairfax, flaming Cafritz, flaming Indian restaurants. I guess these are the stories we miss on busy news days. Flame on, Johnny Torch!
deborah goss—any relation to heather?
Indeed, my mother the roving tourist, reporting from the field on the way to NatGeo this morning.
wow, heather. very impressive. you have to be the first person who has had a family member submit content, eh?
Well, I guess I'm not going to Naan and Beyond for lunch today.
Inability to get to Naan and Beyond is a much bigger tragedy than loss of The Indian Experience, as the experience there is usually depressing. Oh well, burrito cart here I come.
Hopefully, the burrito cart won't burst into flames, although the combination of cheese, refried beans, and pickled jalapenos is bound to cause "spotaneous combustion" of one sort or another. Just don't do it near the propane tanks. Arriba! Arriba!
This place is cursed. First the stabbing a couple of years ago and now this. Apparently the experience is getting out alive.
So I see Indian food fumes coming out of duct work is very similar to Indian food fumes coming out of my duct work.
anyone have any idea why the california pizza kitchen at Connecticut and N closed down over the weekend?
Closed down as in permanently?
It sure looks like it - paper on all the windows and a note on the door saying the location is closed and to go to other dc locations.
I don't really eat there, but its near where I work and was a surprise this morning.
I heard they were shut down for impersonating a pizzeria.
True story. Years ago, right after KPC opened and putting stupid $h!t on a pizza was still a novelty, I had dinner there. It was alright but not worth taking the leftovers home. Seems like a lot of people felt that way, because just outside, people kept giving their leftover pizzas to the homeless guys. We were seated next to the windows overlooking Connecticut and this couple gave a homeless guy their pizza. I guess the guy was schizo or something, because he thanked them, watched them walk away, then proceeded to scream at the pizza then throw it in the treebox. He walked away, then came back, ate some, then ran off. At first, I figured he was just some mentally ill guy screaming at pizza. Then I thought maybe he was paranoid about taking food from white people. Finally, I came to realize the pizza just plain sucked and he was tired of people unloading their $h!tty leftovers that were giving him violent, explosive diarrhea, hence the running. Moral of the story: when whitey offers you pizza, run.
You see, white people be topping they pizza with diarrhea, but black people be topping they pizza with style.
Damn, Sal! Put some more cheese on that motherfu**er!
Extra cheese is two dollars.
Two dollars?! Forget it!
Yo, Sal, we're gonna boycott your fat pasta ass.
Mothaf**k a window. Radio Raheem is dead.
