We reported yesterday on rumors that the Giro d'Italia, one of professional cycling's biggest events, may come to the District for an opening stage in 2011.
Today we've finally received confirmation that D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, himself an avid cyclist, has indeed been involved in courting the Giro to come to D.C.
"It's my understanding that there have been talks, but nothing is final," Fenty spokesperson Mafara Hobson told us today.
The devil is surely in the details, and talks don't mean that we'll definitely be seeing the Giro on the District's streets. But that Fenty wants it and the race organizers seem interested is exciting news for anyone who can't afford to jet over to Europe to watch the pros race.

Woooo-Hooooo!
wow, you guys were able to pry more information from the fenty administration that mike debonis gets in the average month of asking questions. how do you do it?
You'll know how I did it once you see my next post. Working title: "101 Reasons Mayor Fenty is Awesome and 1,001 Reasons Why You're Not If You Disagree." It's part of a series, actually.
looking forward to part 327—"nevermind, mayor vince gray is the most awesome politician ever"
It'll be different for DC to finally have some good press on local sporting events.
Absolutely!
Do bike races like this one have the type of start where half of the field gets hilariously tangled up and toppled over like a chain reaction? Cause I'd definitely go and watch it then.
Me, too! But only if I get to use my broomstick like they did in "Breaking Away."
Broomstick? Oh Monk, that was a frame pump.
I defer to your superior knowledge of doing stupid things on bikes.
It will never happen.
It's a waste of money!
