High School Student Killed in Drunk-Driving Accident

Thanksgiving is the most dangerous time of the year to be a driver. The holiday weekend often ends with some sad stories to underscore the gratitude that many feel at the start of the holiday season. NBC Washington reports the tragic death of local high school football star Steven Joseph Dankos, who died in a drunk-driving accident. Dankos, a 17-year-old student at River Hill High School in Clarksville, Maryland, was riding in a truck with another underage passenger when the 22-year-old driver -- who was later found to be intoxicated -- lost control of the vehicle, striking ornamental pillars and flipping over. The holidays are marked by celebrations that frequently feature liquor, but it is the great number of drivers on the road at all hours that so greatly increases the incidence of drunk-driving accidents.

Not so sure about "tragic death". Tragic death is when a drunk driver kills a pedestrian or other driver. High school age kids feel nothing will ever happen to them. You get in a car with a drunk driver; chances are something bad will happen.

so we're blaming the kid for his own death now? classy!

In the broad sense of the word, yes. There is no way he "knew" something bad was going to happen, but he does take responsibility for his death (metaphysically) by getting into a car with an inebriated driver. I realize he died and of course that is tragic. My point is driving or riding in a car when there is an inebriated driver can cause your death. No matter how old or young you are it can happen. He would be alive today if he stayed out of the car; that is something he had under his control; pure causality.
