Morning Roundup: The End of Days Edition

Good morning, Washington, and welcome to the post-Halloween, post-normal amount of sunshine world we now live in. As thrilling as it was to get that extra hour of spooktacular party time in on Saturday night, watching the sun set last night at about 5 p.m. brought the end of daylight saving time into sharp focus: it's awful. And it's only going to get worse now that the work week is here, seeing as how most of us will leave the office well after it's dark. Conclusion? Changing the clocks twice a year is disruptive and stupid. Case closed!

D.C. Council vs. The World: Last week, the D.C. Council held several very long, very contentious public hearings, the worst of which were Friday's fairly shocking DPR contract proceedings and Thursday's tar-and-feathering of DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee. Who would have thought that hearing the second round of testimony on the gay marriage bill today could actually be a welcome relief after all that?

Deeds and McConnell Ramp Up for Tuesday: Did anyone go as zombie Creigh Deeds for Halloween? Election Day in Virginia is tomorrow, and the polling numbers indicate the Democratic candidate is pretty well cooked. The Washington Times looks at what may be the only possible way Deeds could end up a winner: the 'surge' voters, who are "the thousands of young, mostly minority, first-time voters who went to the polls last year to help Barack Obama win Virginia." Also from the Times, Republicans across the state are optimistic about their chances.

Briefly Noted: University of Maryland student raped in her College Park home ... Fatal stabbing in Southeast ... D.C. man found shot to death in SUV in PG County ... Police impostors rob house in Loudoun ... Silver Spring man fatally shot at a late-night Halloween party ... Levy suspect accused of threatening witness.

This Day in DCist: Last year we took a fond look back at the Zombie Lurch and the year before that we wondered why no one wanted the Arts and Industries Building.

DCers usually overreact to any shift in their daily commute, whether a sprinkle of rain or snow or the sun setting early at 5 pm, so today’s drive home should be interesting.

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy.

Nothing about the car that exploded last night over in Mt. Pleasant?

I thought that was a dream. I heard a big bang and I woke up thinking I had a break-in.

Wait, what? Sounds cool! Hope no one was hurt. Someone at DCist HQ may need to put some pants on and do some investigative reporting with a camera.

A friend called me last night and told me about how it sounded like a bomb went off and then all you could see was a car on fire.

I just saw that Prince of Petworth post on it. He's calling it a car fire.

Not to be nit-picky but... Day-light Savings ends on November 1 at 2:00 am. Therefore we technically have set the clocks back to standard time. We should be happy that we have had sunlight when leaving work for the past few months, not be mad that we lost sunlight now.

We can rest easy though in the knowledge that by creating daylight savings time, the government has fixed this problem of the Sun rising and setting when ever it wants to!

That's enough out of you, Mr. Voice of Reason.

this morning's "worse than hitler on the road™" award goes to the seriously angry woman from maryland, with the wonderful "save the chesapeake" license plate numbered 778 BMG in her late-model lexus ES330.

i was biking on K street under the tracks north of union station when a car behind me did a nice "honk-and-accelerate-to-intimidate" move. when i caught up to her at the north cap. traffic light, i asked if i could help her. i was helpfully told to get off the road.

i helpfully reminded her that bicycles are legally allowed to use the road, and are encouraged to take the lane so aggressive, angry, uneducated, obese office drones like her can see us and don't accidentally run us over.

she didn't seem to be too happy to be confronted by someone with a firmer grip on the law and reality than her. if you see her 'round town, fellow cyclists, keep your distance. she may just try to run you down.

Which is why we need to address DC's take on 2a better. I have a friend who bikes around Winston-Salem all the time (not bike nice people) with a open-carry taurus judge on his back....he never even gets honked at. :-)

+1 I think you'd see a lot of flat car tires up here.

My worst, scariest driver run-ins have been with Maryland drivers on K Street. They seem to consider K Street NE an extension of the B/W Parkway and drive accordingly.

A few weeks ago, another MD driver tried to intimidate (or flatten) me by accelerating and then slamming on the brakes at the last minute so that his bumper stopped about a foot from my rear wheel. Not having your presence of mind, IMGoph, I just flipped him off.

I can only hope the exploding car in Mount Pleasant and the Godwin-invoking biker anger are unrelated.

Was the guy in PG shot with a 20 guage shotgun? Sounds like a total Omar hit.
