Good morning, Washington. DCist is actually compiling the Roundup from Philadelphia this morning, where the streets are overflowing in grief after last night's World Series loss. We didn't spy any rowdy crowds or inappropriate displays of frustration after the game, but we don't even want to think about what might have happened had something like the Cox cable outage in Virginia gone down up here. Congratulations to all the Yankees fans in the DCist commentariat. We're looking ahead to the Nationals' world championship that's sure to be coming in 2037.

Metro Faces Large Bill to Prevent More Outages: WMATA managed to get the rest of its electronic services back up and running before the evening rush hour on Wednesday, but what needs to be done to prevent something like this from happening again? Lena Sun follows up on this question in the Post, finding that Metro will need $14 million to replace two aging power units, one of which was responsible for yesterday's outage and cannot be repaired. The second unit in question is just as old and is responsible for supplying power to the computers that operate the rail system. Here's the real talk: 'An interim fix is in place, but "there is anxiety" about it, Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said. "There are no other options at this moment."'

Does McDonnell Have a Mandate? Virginia Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell (R) won Tuesday's election by a whopping 17 points over opponent Creigh Deeds, along with helping to usher in a Republican sweep of the state's highest offices. So does that mean he's planning on operating as though he's been handed a mandate? Pretending for a moment that Virginia's single-term governor has much power to begin with, that question is receiving some mixed coverage. The Washington Post and the Associated Press attend the same press conference and reach opposite conclusions: the Post describes McDonnell as pledging to steer toward the center, while the AP (via the WashTimes) writes that McDonnell will be relying on a perceived mandate to transform his campaign proposals into law.

Pedestrian struck by car in Southwest

Hmmm, seems like the pedestrian was struck by the driver of a car. A while back, Greater Greater Washington remarked on this phenomenon in the headlines of self-aware sentient cars striking people and objects.

A while back? Try like every other day.

HOLY F!

"Officials say British Airways flight 264 struck the tarmac around 7:30 p.m. They say one of the wings collided with the jet brake and caused so much damage the wing was nearly cut in half."

Shouldn't that say, "The pilot struck the tarmac?" These planes don't crash of their own accord.

Two different stories about PEDESTRIANS struck on a freaking highway. And neither of the victims were Dan Snyder. It's just not my day.

So did they ever find out why the guy caught fire at the gas station? Because last time I checked, unless you're a character from "Bleak House," you don't spontaneously combust for no f**king reason.

Gas fight a la Zoolander, I'm sure.

You know dozens of people spontaneously combust each year, it's just not really widely reported.

It happens sometimes. People just explode. Natural causes.

you hit the nail on the head when you said "Pretending for a moment that Virginia's single-term governor has much power to begin with..."

since all VA governors only get one term, who cares if you get 50.1% of the vote or 99%? you're going to be out on your ass after 4 years regardless, so you might as well have fun!

The fault with your Does McDonnell Have a Mandate? question is that you are relying on outdated, unproven "mathematical" concepts.

What you should learn from the Washington Political Machine (All Rights Reserved)is that if you win, you have a mandate.

Won by 1%--you got a mandate!
Won by 25%--you got a mandate!

Notice the difference? Of course not.

I guess Philadelphian trash had to resort to falling off "Loser Cabs" last night

I'm glad my team's fans don't celebrate their championships by totally destroying their city, unlike our Neanderthal cousins in Philly and Boston. Go Yanks!

Okay, not since '77 at least.

I'm pretty sure that has absolutely nothing to do with the World Series. Care to provide evidence otherwise?

True, there was plenty of other rioting going on in the city that summer, but after game 6 it spread onto the field:

"By game six, as Jackson pounded titanic home runs into the night, scores of drunken young men sat with their legs dangling over the right-field wall. When they charged onto the field, they were met by a riot squad, who clubbed away not only at the rowdies but also at families celebrating on the grass."

There were also reports of seats being ripped out but I don't have a link.

I've been meaning to read that. Maybe I'll bump it to the top of my list.

Cox Lost Signal During World Series...Metro computers going down....WE ARE UNDER A CYBER ATTACK and don't know it.

Where the hell have you been? The CHUDs are practically running WMATA through their proxy Red Lectroid overlord, the so-called John "Bigbootay" Cantoe. Help me, Obiwan KenoDEEP. You're our only hope.

when will the local and federal governments (for whose employees metro was originally conceived) understand the fact that the metro rail system has reached it's critical age and requires a whole huge amount of money to upgrade, well, pretty much everything?

failures to metro's systems and equipment have been happening with greater regularity in the past 5-10 years for a reason, yet no one wants to address the issue at it's core. it's really sad, but metro is headed for a complete collapse without proper funding for retrofits and upgrades necessary to keep the system running at the level that the public expects.

i'm going to bet on right after the whole damn thing falls apart.

that seems to be when we respond to crises the best.
