Good morning, Washington, and welcome to one of those weird times when a federal holiday happens to fall on a Wednesday, leaving a good portion of the city with a day off smack in the middle of the week. Banks, schools and government agencies are all closed today, and the Metrorail system is running on a modified Saturday schedule. Even if you're at your desk this morning despite all this, think about finding a way to thank a veteran today. We'll have some suggestions on how to do that later this morning.
John Allen Muhammad is Dead: Convicted D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad died at 9:11 p.m. last night, after receiving a cocktail of three lethal drugs from the state of Virginia. Sarah Abruzzese of the Washington Times and Josh White and Maria Glod of the Washington Post were all there to witness Muhammad's death, but Paul Duggan's essay remembering the terror that Muhammad and his accomplice wrought is the must-read. 'What did it teach us? A simple truth, says Caroline Namrow, a doctor who rushed to Walekar's aid Oct. 3 after bullet fragments tore through his heart at a Mobil in Aspen Hill, the third of five killings in 16 hours in Montgomery. "We're on this Earth for such a short time," Namrow says. "You never know when it's going to end."'
U.S. Secret Service Fatally Injures Pedestrian: Secret Service officers driving two different vehicles struck and killed a pedestrian on Suitland Parkway early Wednesday morning, the Post reports. The collision occurred at about 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of the parkway and Naylor Road, just inside the border of Prince George's County. Very few details are available on the nature of the crash this morning, and the name of the victim, an adult male, is still being withheld pending notification of his family.
Briefly Noted: Metro agrees to allow monitors on live tracks ... Twelve charged with stealing library books from Prince George's County ... Quicker economic rebound seen for D.C. area ... Md. Marine sergeant killed in Afghanistan.
This Day in DCist: Last year, Virginia state GOP Chair Jeff Frederick was putting his foot in his mouth.

D.C. Unemployment Rate Reaches 11.9 Percent

Nor was there any information about why the Secret Service vehicles were on Suitland Parkway.
Well.......the last time I checked it was a free country! Happy Veterans Day everyone.
The Secret Service usually flies POTUS/VP out of Andrews AFB. They also have to escort visiting dignitaries to and from Andrews, which necessitates the trip down Suitland Pkway. I know this because they're always driving past my window overlooking the SE Freeway.
And WTF is this "free country" bull$h!t? You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship. A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes...
You're right, monkey. No one should be out after 2am unless they're returning library books!!
I dreamt about this last night. It was one of those hazy, half remembered, dreams that frequently come after drinking high gravity beer.
The pedestrian was actually changing a flat tire. He was either AAA mid-Atlantic flak Lon Anderson or WTOP hack Mark Seagraves, and the Secret Service was on their way to escort Obama to his regular 4:30 AM basketball game with Arne Naess.
Happy VD to you too, Liz. Ooooh, the double entendres!
You should put a NSFW on that metro story link. The Jim Graham picture caused me to recoil in fright.
Stealing library books is one of those "gateway behavior" indicators that inevitably leads to riskier antisocial activities like annexing the Sudetenland. Because it's not that much of a jump from stealing books to burning them. Now, I'm not saying these guys are worse than Hitler, but I am saying that Neville Chamberlain would do well not to promise "peace in our time" before these guys' borrowing priveledges are revoked. I mean, $h!t, I didn't have both my legs blown off at Chung King and La Choy just so little pukes could swipe copies of "Heather Has Two Mommies" at an enormous profit.
I much preferred the vegan corollary work, "Peas in our Time."
Hitler was a vegetarian. Just sayin'.
Stealing library books barely registers on the National Socialist Evility index. At most, it's a 3rd degree Riefenstahl. At most, it results in fawning poetry saluting more evil individuals and perhaps some photography.
At most? At most, indeed. When's that comment editing feature coming out anyway?
Annexing the Sudetenland = comment o' the day. It's early still, but that one made me spit out my coffee. As with all of the references to batshit crazy Germans. Achtung!
...stealing library books from Prince George's County...
I mean, how many copies of "Dick and Jane" does one person need?
I think that Liz would agree with me when I say you can never have enough Dick.
agree
the number of pedestrian deaths on the suitland parkway is just amazing. i mean, it's a limited access highway. what are people doing walking on it? seems like a strong case of darwinism at work here.
The Secret Service guy will not have to face charges. It wasn't his fault. Bitter and wracked with guilt, he will get divorced, alienate his colleagues and be demoted to protecting the Vice President's poodle. He will spend his off time getting drunk and playing piano in a divvy jazz bars while he rides out time until his pension.
Then, several years from now, the 3rd cousin of the crash victor goes on a killing spree and the Service will realize that there is only ONE MAN who stop him. (oh, and he is also teamed with a super hot female agent).
Considering all the system outages when Metro says Metrorail system is running on a modified Saturday schedule, does this mean no trains, single tracking, and buses between stations?
