NextBus App Now Available for BlackBerry

2009_1111_nextbus.jpg The folks at NextBus have just released an application for the BlackBerry, available for $2.99 at this link. It appears to work somewhat similarly to the iPhone version, which we reviewed earlier this year. BlackBerry users, be sure to let us know how it works for you.

In other mobile real time bus arrival application news, Greater Greater Washington has a review of a new Circulator iPhone app, created by developer Yaogang Lian using OCTO's open data feed. That app costs $0.99, and attempts to improve upon the official Circulator app by offering bus arrival estimates and showing the physical location of Circulator buses on a GPS-enabled map.

Why would I pay $2.99 for an App when the same function is available free on the web browser?

Why would I pay $2.99 for the app when the NextBus times are so inaccurate that I'm better off following the posted schedules?

Here's another case where if WMATA would just release live GPS data developers could compete and write their own predicting algorithms (just like what was done with the Circulator). Sure, some would be inaccurate but others wouldn't. WMATA wouldn't have to pay nextbus and they'd get apps developed for free.

Because releasing live GPS data would provide everyone with accurate, subjective information demonstrating whether buses are on schedule. If you're WMATA, do you really want that information released?!?!?!?!?!

You assume WMATA has GPS in their buses. I hear they don't b/c their union opposes. Can anyone out there confirm or deny that?

How else would NextBus work? You need to have some kind of location-tracking device to get real time bus locations on a map. Some drivers might not switch them on, but they've gotta still be there.

You are right, of course.
I wish the GPS was always active on the buses, if only to provide a way for Metro to get a handle on speeding bus drivers.

Cool... now give us Android users some love!

you to your messaging/ text messaging part of your phone and than go to send pic message You will then type in your friends phone number and than you will press the down button. You will see a part where is says Picuture. You will than click a button (not sure which one) and your pics will come up. Click the one you want and than it will take you back to your message. Above where you pic it there is a thing where you can type a message or text and you can say what you want to them. When you are done press send and your message will get delivered to your friend. good luck and i hope i helped.
