Outdoor ice-skating at the National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden rink may be a uniquely Washington activity for working off extra holiday calories, but it won't be an option this Thanksgiving weekend. According to the ice rink's guest services office and a note on their web site, the Sculpture Garden rink remains closed due to "technical difficulties with the ice-making equipment." A representative explained that while they hope repairs will be completed within 10-14 days, there is a chance that the rink may not open at all this season – typically mid-November to March – if the problem turns out to be more extensive. While the Pavilion Cafe remains open, we're hoping ice-skating will be back soon.

I suppose the one at pershing park will also this year remain closed, as it did last year?

"Technical difficulties with the ice-making equipment" being code words for "Morlock monkeywrenching." Those Edgar Winter lookalikes are going to hars extremes to prevent a repeat performance of last year's spectacular "CHUD Ice Capades." Jealous!

This is going to lead to a lot of "clichéd first date technical difficulties"

I'd say that "technical difficulties with ice-making equipment" is code words for "it's been too fracking hot to make outdoor-fracking ice in the middle of this tropical christmas season we've been having"

The ice rink at Pentagon Row is fully operational. See what happens when have a private company with a profit motive in charge of things?

Yeah, private companies have never had technical difficulties.

Can't we just skate on the Caps ice? They won't mind...

GGW has posted about the "3rd Generation Mall Plan"

My idea? Bring back ice skating to the Lincoln Reflecting pool!! Unfortunately, you would probably need cooling system in these global warming days, so as a plan B-scrap the Sculpture Garden and refrigerate the Capitol Reflecting pool.

I guarantee that with the backdrop it would rival Rock Center in terms of popularity.

I agree to this on the condition that the pool be filled with the corpses of hobos and elves who died in battle. There should also be little lights formed by the burning gasses of the decomposing hobos.

Careful now, or tourists go down to join the dead ones and light little candles of their own.

Making ice can be tricky. And when your Polish grandmother passes away before she has a chance to write down the recipe? Forget about it.

Nah, there's no global warming...
