President Obama Pardons the White House Turkey

President Barack Obama pardoned his first White House turkey, Courage, a little while ago. The White House has since released video of the ceremony (see below), during which Obama called Courage "a good looking bird." The president was in a joking mood, noting that "there are days when I'm reminded why I ran for this office ... and then there are days like this, when you pardon a turkey and send it Disneyland."

Obama also announced that the entire Obama family will be heading to D.C. non-profit Martha's Table this afternoon to deliver a few turkeys, reminding us once again that the Obamas have made a point of getting involved with local groups like virtually no other first family.

Funnier still is this preview video of the ceremony, put together by White House staff:

clearly the 2nd vid was not produced by that harold and kumar dude.

Meanwhile Sasha and Malia are just jealous that the turkey gets to goto Disneyland and they're stuck at the white house..

I live in a condominium near Martha's table and I have roof access. When people started gathering nearby, I went up on my roof to watch. A police officer whistled at me and gestured to back up. I interpreted this as an instruction to get off the roof. I didn't really care that much, so I left the roof.

Do the police and/or Secret Service have the authority to disallow me from being on my roof? What if I had a unit that faced the street. Could I be disallowed from looking out the window?

When they are trying to secure a location for the President to visit? Yep. And you can look out the window, but they can also send people in your building to to check it out as well. My office is near the White House and we get various agents stopping pedestrians, traffic disruptions and the like. They are good at what they do, and they try not to be that disruptive.

And yet they can't stop random reality show wannabes from crashing a party at the White House...
