Shooting Victim Was the Brother of DeOnté Rawlings

The man who was shot and killed while trying to board a Metrobus near 14th and H Streets NE this morning was George Rawlings, the brother of DeOnté Rawlings, according to the Washington Post. DeOnté Rawlings was 14 when he was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer in 2007.

George Rawlings, 21, was killed today reportedly as he was leaving a funeral service for another young man, who was shot to death on Halloween. An attorney for the Rawlings family told the Post that George had been in hiding since the Halloween shooting, to which he was an apparent witness, because he knew he was being targeted. And there's this devastating quote from the attorney, Gregory Lattimore:

"When the thought of going to the police was mentioned, this is a situation where DeOnté was killed by the police . . . so how could [George] go to the police and expect them to legitimately try to help him? That was his thinking," Lattimore said.

D.C. police now say they are looking for three suspects in today's shooting.

It's hard to even fathom what his family is going through right now. It sounds like such a tragic cycle of violence.

"It sounds like such a tragic cycle of violence."
That right there is the story.

That's exactly right-- this was clearly a targeted shooting and not a random victim.

BTW, why did DCist fail to mention that Deonte Rawlings shot at the police, forcing them to return fire in self-defense? Also, his age at the time is irrelevant and only slants the story. 14-year-old or not, he shot at the police and had a stolen vehicle.

1st thought: Wow, what are the chances?
2nd thought: In DC, pretty darn good.

Police said they think Hunter planned to buy a gun on Halloween night, apparently from a man known on the streets as "DL," who is a member of the Kennedy Dog Pound Crew, a gang to which Hunter had ties. Lee is a member of that crew, which hangs out near Seventh and O streets NW, according to the affidavit.

The Convention Center and the DC Tourism Bureau should hire these guys as tourguides. They probably know the neighborhood really well. At the very least, Be Bar should hire them to beat the $h!t out of fagbashers.

I don't feel bad for his family at all. The city is better off without him. His family (parents) should feel responsible for both of their deaths.

Um, ouch. The only info provided here is that he was a witness to a shooting. No indication that he himself had gang ties or even a record. Maybe he did, but that info isn't here and you're assuming an awful lot. The problem many of these kids have is that totally getting away from this shit means leaving their family and neighborhood behind. How would you feel if that was your only option? There was a kid shot in a drive-by last year in Adams Morgan whose only "crime" was too closely resembling his brother, who was in a gang and targeted by some rivals. He was an art student. Is the city "better off without him" too? Think before you open your mouth and paint all these kids with the same brush.

My parents both lived in areas where staying with family, friends, etc would have meant alcoholism, early death, heart disease from a poor diet, no job opportunities. Poor people make that decision every single day and it is only a "hard decision" if you love your neighborhood- people who hated crime, violence, substance abuse and, yes, their parents acceptance of same, spend weekeday afternoons in the library, weekends at their job they got themselves and find that teacher who helps them apply for scholarships. At my age I know, maybe about 20 people who did that. Look at those kids in Ballou ROTC, you know? They've got their eyes on the prize- abandoning their dysfunctional community ASAP.

Looks like 2007 was a busy year for this young man.

While it's impossible to tell what he would/could have contributed to society, it's safe to say the DC Superior Court has one less frequent flyer.

I don't say that with snark. More matter-of-fact resignation. It is what it is.

Let's celebrate kids who manage to get through life with no Superior Court records. Jesus H Christmas, is it that freakin' hard??

No family deserves to have this happen to them, in my opinion.

It didn't happen to them engineergirl, it was caused by them. Have you even read the story?

Hmm, I can think of someone else the city might not have need for after that comment.

Not every family can produce Nobel Prize winners.

What a remarkably racist comment.

F-YOU-MAN! Play the race card with me and you'll lose. My comment was meant as a slap in the face to those who feel the boys deserved their fate or that their parents failed to raise them. So before you call someone a racist - by the mere fact that you perceive their comment to be racist - just remember that not everyone thinks like you. Thank goodness.

At least I pay my income, property and sales taxes! I pay through the nose so this city can waste it on human filth, whatever. Just wait, his mother is going to be crying the blues on the news about how her child was good and never hurt a fly, whatever. I don't buy that ghetto bullshit and neither should you!

... countdown to a second law$uit against the city for what reason this time I can only imagine.

This kid may not have been an angel, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still tragic. Anyone who is satisfied by this turn of events because they may or may not have "deserved" it needs to get their head examined.

Your definition of tragic is far too lenient for me. Unfortunate, absolutely, but tragic? It's only tragic if people pretend that court records for a George Rawlings aren't public and we don't know what he has been accused of in the past.

Convicted of. It's hard to know what the charge was prior to him pleading down.

Well in that case, the whole life he'd been leading could be considered pretty tragic. Doesn't matter if he was the perp or the victim, the events surrounding his life were all tragedies from a societal standpoint.

It would be tragic if the kid was in his house studying for a math test and got struck by a stray bullet, but this story is more.. what's the word..TYPICAL.

But how is this going to affect Sticky Rice and the next bar that is moving onto H Street? Answers, please!

Who cares about Sticky Rice? It's coconut cream and mango that are the key players in that crew.
