For the procrastinators and cheapskates in the audience, we recommend the following inexpensive New Year's Eve options:

  • The Fridge is hosting a Great Depression-themed event, dubbed "Party Like it's 1929." The cover is only $5, and drinks start at $3. 9 p.m. - 3 a.m.
  • Palace of Wonders is up to their usual tricks with a daredevil show, and their cover is only $20, which includes a midnight "champagne of beers" toast.
  • The Velvet Lounge has a trainwreck tableau themed party (think Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty), plenty of DJs to fill the night, plus an “adult photo booth”; $15 at the door, 9 p.m. - 2 a.m., champagne toast included.
  • Science Club's “Egalitarian Gala” has a $25 open-bar cover from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m., which includes PBR and any rail drinks, or no cover for a cash bar.
  • The Red and the Black has a zombie-themed party with a $5 cover, featuring zombie movies, zombie bartenders, etc..
  • Tickets are still available for the always excellent Peaches O'Dell & Her Orchestra New Year's Eve show at the Black Cat. $25, $8 p.m.

FIRST NIGHT: If you're looking for a place to bring kids for non-alcoholic night-time fun, head to Alexandria for their First Night, featuring live performances from 7 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. throughout King Street, and fireworks at midnight. $15 for adults, free for kids 12 and under.
