For those of you who managed to get into work today, we're curious, what was your mode of transportation? And if it differed significantly from your usual method, feel free to note the relevant switch in the comments.

Answer #5
I'd like to know what hearty soul rode into work on their bike today. Bravo!
Right there with you on Answer 5, monkey.
I rode 7 miles to my mother's house on a bicycle with city slick tires yesterday morning. It was actually quite fun and I felt like an intrepid bad ass. I had to dig her out and if I didn't get out there she was going to do it herself. Anyway, when I was ready to go home, and the 4 inches of packed snow abandoned streets had turned into 4 inches of slush on too busy streets, I had to walk my bicycle through slush for 7 fucking miles. Suuuucked.
My blackberry is my office.
Suggested corollary poll: How many of you work for companies headquartered in other cities whose managers, as a result, acted like total douches toward any DC office folk who dared to question whether we would be expected to show up today?
(*raises hand*)
I walked in, which is relatively normal. Sometimes I'll take the bus when the weather is bad, but I doubted that would make sense today. (I was right. I live right next to the Southwest Circulator's southern terminus and was northbound at 6th and K when I saw the bus coming south to that stop. The bus didn't catch up with me until the National Gallery of Art.)
Sounds like the normal speed for the Circulator.
Surprisingly, the Southwest Circulator is usually pretty good about putting the pedal to the metal, especially when compared with the K Street snoozefest.
I've had drivers on the K St. Circu-late-or slow down coming up to green lights to purposefully wait for the light to change to red. It makes you want to scream.
Circulator drivers who slow for a green are noticing the pedestrian countdown timer and stop for a green when they think they can't get through the intersection before the yellow. It's actually a good practice - WMATA buses would have killed/maimed a handful fewer people over the past few years if they did this.
Actually sometimes no, they are in fact catching red lights in order to remain on the listed schedule and prevent bus bunching. (A driver once confirmed this for us.) It's irritating, but I guess it's better than no bus for 20 mins and then three in a row, like the service the Circ's municipal friends provide ...
Right, they have to maintain regular intervals between buses, basically by intentionally slowing down ones that are catching up to another bus. The only other option, really, is to have a bus run 'express' if it gets too slow, bypassing stops... and that's bound to annoy people even more.
Suffering from cabin fever - walked to work (normal) - nobody here (sweet) ... heard lady complaining to a hotel doorman that she had been waiting an hour for a bus and nothing came by ... saw several delivery trucks stuck in the snow spinning their tires.
I waited til after 9 to leave and it still took me well over an hour to get from Columbia Heights to Farragut on the metro.
Did anyone take the Metro during the regular rush hour time? If it was so slow after rush hour I can't imagine the combination of slow + more people. I'm thinking I'll leave early to avoid evening rush hour.
Apparently there must be a lot of snow piled up in the underground Metro tunnels, since they are running what feels like once every 2 hours.
I am thankfully a telecommuter. Although this is supposed to be my week in, but my managers have enough foresight to let those of us stuck in our neighborhoods to work from home.
WFH. My boss went to work NoVa-> RKV and none of us showed up.
Here is another poll for you.
Q: Because you don't work for the Federal Government and you either can't get to work or your office is in a closed federal building, how are you penalized by your employer for the lost hours.
1: I have to use my annual leave
2: I can put it on overhead
3: I have to make up the time by working until midnight
4: I lost my job so screw my former co-workers
5: Answer 5
Then your company has a shity contract (contractors fault) or they are lying to you and double dipping the government (governments fault). Most agencies have clauses covering this exact circumstance, if they didn't the well your employer wasn't paying attention.
There could be about a thousand different scenarios that could be going on, but the fact you are not getting paid for today either you or the government is getting screwed, I suspect both...with boss making out happily.
Number 1 for me. Incredibly frustrating. In the email the powers that be sent out last night, they happily acknowledged that most of us would have no way to get into work, so we'd need to use our vacation time or, if we have no leave accrued, unpaid leave.
Wow, thanks, kind employer.
why isn't "work from home" an option? along with "no work, just play in the snow"
Good points. Just answer 5.
based on the poll results so far, it looks like us walkers are bearing the brunt of this non-snow day, like being punished for being so enviro-friendly. If I normally had to commute by bus or metro, my office would have let me stay home.
yesh, and i'm none too happy about this.
I took my magical unicorn. The antigravity generators on it are spotty though, so I try to travel along unplowed streets in case they give out.
I can't get to work because Metro is worthless. I live in Silver Spring and have no idea when service will resume.
Metro is totally worthless. But do you live near downtown SS? I was able to get on the S4 bus this morning, and it got me downtown to work shockingly fast. Of course, I have no idea how/if I'll be able to get home tonight, but that's a battle for later.
VA bus driver owned up to they didn't start buses running until 9AM.
Was going to go to Old Town, but there is almost no transit service at all serving Alexandria and South Arlington.
Walking to/from work was good exercise - it was like running on the beach. So much slush!
Roads are still a mess downtown. No way Feds will be open tomorrow.
