Terps to Take On Texas in 2014
The University of Maryland has entered into an agreement with Big 12 powerhouse Texas for a home-and-home series starting in 2014. The first game would take place at nearby FedEx Field, while the return game would be played in Austin the following year.
This is a win-win for both programs, as it gives each team national television exposure, plenty of available tickets given at FedEx Field's 91,665-seat capacity, and a generous payout. As reported on ESPN1300 AM, each the two teams combined would immediately receive $3.5 million from the deal, not to mention the money each school would earn via their respective conference television contracts.
What makes this out-of-conference game even more appealing is that the Washington metropolitan area is home to one of the largest Texas alumni bases in the United States. Add in the fact that Longhorn fans travel rather well, and you have yourselves a capacity crowd.
The Texas game is just the latest in a series of marquee college match-ups at FedEx Field in the coming years. Maryland is also scheduled to face Notre Dame at FedEx on November 12, 2011. Surprisingly, it will be the first time the Terps have ever played at the Redskins' home field, while it will be the Fighting Irish's second visit (they shutout Navy back in 1998).
But you won't even have to wait that long to attend a big college football game in Landover. Hokie fans already have Labor Day circled on this year's calendar, as Virginia Tech will be taking on Boise State in a highly-anticipated prime-time matchup. Then on November 20, Penn State takes on Indiana in a Big 10 contest which was originally a home game for the Hoosiers, a move that's come under plenty of criticism. Tickets for both games are currently on sale via Ticketmaster.
