Weekly Music Agenda
TUESDAY
Probably one of the most recognizable faces in Brazilian music to American audiences, Seu Jorge has augmented his musical fame via a couple of high-profile film roles, first in the modern classic City of God, then in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic, where he reimagined the songs of David Bowie in Portuguese for acoustic guitar. In his latest incarnation, Jorge is teaming with a trio of other musicians to form Seu Jorge and Almaz. Their debut record is a cover-heavy affair, with material coming from sources as diverse as Kraftwerk and Michael Jackson, as well as Brazilian sources. Jorge and Almaz play an early show tonight at the 9:30 Club. 6:00 p.m., $25.

WEDNESDAY
Obsessive home recorder, no-fi pioneer, certified musical genius, and/or certifiable oddball lunatic, Ariel Pink brings his Haunted Graffiti show to the Rock and Roll Hotel this week for his cockeyed twist on the history of pop music. He'll be joined by Magic Kids and Puro Instinct (formerly Pearl Harbor). 8:30 p.m., $14.
>> Black Cat Backstage: Pygmy Lush, Ghastly City Sleep, Summer Pledge. 8:30 p.m., $8.
>> 9:30 Club: Deadmau5, Pleasurekraft, Will Eastman. 7:00 p.m., sold out. This lineup appears Thursday and Friday nights as well, and both of those are also sold out.
THURSDAY
The early forecast for this Thursday calls for a chance of thunderstorms, but we're hoping that they are timed to avoid interfering with that night's Fort Reno, which features Mary Timony's latest group, Soft Power (who we reviewed just a couple of months ago). Soft Power sounds like what one might expect from Timony, who has cultivated a distinctive sound throughout her solo career, plus an added collaborative element. They'll be preceded by Black Telephone and Color School. 7:00 p.m., Free.
>> Black Cat Backstage: Batusis (featuring Sylvain Sylvain and Cheetah Chrome), Prima Donna. 9:00 p.m., $12.

>> Iota: Horse Feathers and Foley and Reni. 9:00 p.m., $12.
>> Birchmere: Taylor Hicks, Javier. 7:30 p.m., $39.50.
FRIDAY
Young upstart label Windian Records has built up an impressive roster of artists in only a year of existence, so the label is celebrating with not one, but two nights to highlight all the bands currently on their roster. Even splitting the bill in two results in two full nights of music. Windian puts a candle on the cake for the first time on Friday night at the Velvet Lounge with performances by The Shirks, The Ladies, Maybe Baby, Social Problems, Electricutions, and Young and High. 8:00 p.m., $16 for both nights, $10 for one night. Skip ahead to Saturday's listings to check out the lineup for the second night.
>> Rock and Roll Hotel: Bomba Estero, King Changó and Natalia Clavier of Theivery Corporation. 10:00 p.m., $18/$20.
>> The Red and the Black: Watermelon (formerly Joppa), Kenton Dunson. $8.
>> Iota: Thriving Ivory, Ponderosa. 9:00 p.m., $15.
>> Birchmere: Buddy Guy. 7:30 p.m., $69.50 (sold out).

What's that? Not enough Windian Records celebrating on Friday night? Come back to the Velvet Lounge for round two of the label's first birthday celebration, this time with The Points (who we interviewed a couple of years back), Two Tears, New Rock Church of Fire (***), The Cheniers. 8:00 p.m., $10, or $16 total if you go on both Friday and Saturday.

SUNDAY
Just over a year ago, brothers Stone and Holt Weeks were killed in a car accident in Northern Virginia on their way back to their home in Rockville. A foundation now exists in their name, in cooperation with the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, and part of their mission is "sponsoring creative and fun events that raise money, awareness and volunteers for good causes." This weekend at U Street Music Hall qualifies, as the foundation puts on An Evening with Greta, featuring Greta, of Gold Motel & formerly of The Hush Sound, who will be performing both solo and with Gold Motel. Also on the bill are Tennis System, Matthew Hemerlein, and DJ KnoxBox. 8:00 p.m., $20.
>> Black Cat Backstage: An Evening with Andrius Mamontovas. 8:00 p.m., $30.
>> DC9: Power Pirate, The Neon Rush, Ivy Rose. 7:30 p.m., $8.
>> Iota: Frazey Ford (of the Be Good Tanyas), Stripmall Ballads. 8:00 p.m., $15.
