J Tillman plays the Black Cat on Monday night with Phosphorescent. Photo courtesy of Western Vinyl artist website.
Fleet Foxes' singer drummer J. Tillman's most recent release didn't quite match the thrilling peaks of his band's first full-length, but it was a typically solid "solo" album, filled with introspective, often beautiful folk tunes. Phosphorescent rounds out a terrific double bill to start the week at the Black Cat. $13/15, 8 p.m.
>> Wolf Trap: Counting Crows' Traveling Circus and Medicine Show. $30-48, 8 p.m.
>> The Birchmere: Johnny Lang with Sharon Little. $49.50. 7:30 p.m.
>> DC9: Foo Fighter Chris Shiflett brings his band, The Dead Peasants, to town. With Ari Shrine. $10/12, 8:00 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: Garland of Hours, Anna Connolly, Dennis Kane. $10, 8:00 p.m.
TUESDAY
The dead of summer always feels like prime classic rock radio time to me. And who evokes the silliness of the genre better than George Thorogood and the Destroyers, still boozin' and bloozin' after all these years. Check them out at Wolf Trap on Tuesday night. The Robert Cray Band opens up. $25-42, 7:30 p.m.
>> The Black Cat: Young Galaxy and Oberhofer. $10. 9:00 p.m.
>> DC9: East Hundred and the Canon Logic. $8, 8:00 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: Bronze Radio Return. $12, 8:30 p.m.

Not a lot going on inside the Beltway this week, but lots and lots of big shows in pavilion land. Wednesday sees Green Day make their annual summertime stop through Manassas (but their first ever at "Jiffy Lube Live"), with AFI supporting. $20-85, 7:00 p.m.
>> The Black Cat: Mumiy Troll and Run Run Run. $20. 8:00 p.m.
>> DC9: Ty Segall, The Tennis System, and The BATHS. $8/10, 8:30 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: Open Mic Night. Free, 8:00 p.m.
THURSDAY
Families are making their ritual trips to Target and Staples for school supplies. Meanwhile, the Jonas Brothers roll into Jiffy Lube Live to cash in on the last few weeks that kids are allowed to go out on a weeknight. Gotta respect that $15 lawn ticket price, though. With Demi Lovato. $15-114.50, 7:00 p.m.
>> Merriweather Post Pavilion: O.A.R. and Citizen Cope. $35-45. 5:30 p.m.
>> DC9: Dax Riggs, Motel Motel. $8/10, 8:30 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: The Greenbeets and Dan Haas. $10, 9:00 p.m.
FRIDAY
I don't really know a whole lot about Maroon 5, but I know enough to know that I probably don't quite comprehend just how popular they are. They're on the road in support of their upcoming Hands All Over, produced by Mutt Lange and out in September. Catch them at Jiffy Lube Live. $15-114.50, 7:00 p.m.
>> Black Cat: The Moderate, The Beanstalk Library, and The NRIs. $10. 9:00 p.m.
>> DC9: The always dependable Liberation Dance Party. $7. 9:00 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: Memory House and Twin Sister. $10, 9:00 p.m.
SATURDAY
Public Enemy might be in the victory lap stage of a pretty remarkable career, but their set at GW's Lisner Auditorium last year proved they're not ready to hang it up yet. They're at the 9:30 Club with Octave and Kendo the Almost Famous. $35, 8:00 p.m. doors.
>> Black Cat: The Plums and Cephalopods, brought to you by BC's Second Saturdays. $8. 8:00 p.m. at the Backstage.
>> DC9: The always dependable Liberation Dance Party. $7. 9:00 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: The Hounds Below and Redline Addiction. $10, 9:00 p.m.
>> Rock and Roll Hotel: The Deadmen, Lightfoot, Sarah White and the Pearls, Brandon Butler. $10/12. 9:00 p.m.
SUNDAY
David Gray is one of those hard working musicians that labors and labors in relative obscurity, then one day, for whatever reason, hits the jackpot. His breakthrough, White Ladder, came a full six years after his debut. And that was a full decade ago. Still, the influence of the drum machine-backed "Babylon" and "Please Forgive Me" has been all over the pop charts ever since. Along with the soulful voice of Ray LaMontagne, it's a pretty decent double bill. At Merriweather Post Pavilion, $40-75, 5:30 p.m. doors.
>> Black Cat: Cults, Maps and Atlases, Laura Stevenson and the Cans. $12. 9:00 p.m. at the Backstage.
>> Rock and Roll Hotel: Dragonette, Shy Child, Detox Retox. $7. 9:00 p.m doors.
>> Iota Club and Cafe: David Kitchen, Sematic, and Margot MacDonald. $12, 7:30 p.m.
>> 9:30 Club: HFSestival and California Tortilla present Battle to Break Out. $10. 11:00 a.m.
