Taxicab Moratorium Partially Lifted for Green Cabs

10.19.2011_enviroCAB2.jpg Since earlier this year, there's been a moratorium on taxicab licenses. But today, Mayor Vince Gray announced that the moratorium would be partially lifted for very specific types of cabs.

According to a press release, the D.C. Taxicab Commission will start accepting license applications from companies that provide green cabs, of which at least 10 percent of the fleet has to be handicapped-accessible.

The first green cab company in the region set up shop in Arlington in 2008, but environmentally friendly cabs still represent a distinct minority amongst the 8,500 or so taxis in the District. The first wheelchair-accessible cabs only arrived in May 2011 -- but there's only 20 of them in the city so far.

Gray and Taxicab Commissioner Ron Linton said that the move was a step towards a more modern taxicab fleet. Linton has said he'd like to see cabs take credit cards and generally provide more consistent service, but those improvements may come at the expense of a surcharge on every fare.

The idea that we have to pay a surcharge bribe in order to get cabs that adhere to even basic modern cab standards is horse shit.

Does this mean bribes from/to the taxicab commission can now be paid in bills instead of a sockful of quarters?

    Maybe in carbon offset credits.
But seriously. This seems like a good thing. I just wish I didnt have to wonder whether the owners/lobbyists/lawyers made an illegal contribution of graveyard dirt.

    That's Soylent Green cabs.
They run on an 80/20 mix of hipster-Vizsla blood, and are constructed in Ward 9 from salvaged fixie-parts.

So the cabbie that took me to the airport last week was pretty upset that big New York cab companies will be coming to DC with new vehicles that offer electronic payment and what not.

I wasn't sure how those companies will get licenses, but now it makes sense. New vehicles that are environmentally friendly, that offer electronic payment and don't smell ...

    SOLD!
  • Hell, I'll settle for a cab company that just shows up when I schedule a ride to the airport.  Anything else is icing on the cake.

Really?  Red Top has always been on time for airport pickups - usually 5-10 minutes early.
  • Yeah.  I know Red Top works.  But is it too much to ask that you don't have to call a cab company in Virginia to have a reliable pick-up?
