"About 50 Teens" Steal Goods From Silver Spring 7-Eleven

Back in August, after a series of highly publicized crimes involving so-called flash mobs of teens around the area, the Montgomery County General Assembly started floating proposals to criminalize such behavior. (This, despite the fact that most of said behavior was, you know, already illegal.)

After viewing the above video, though, we're expecting that kind of talk to start up again.

The clip is the key piece of evidence in a crime Montgomery County police are currently investigating, during which "about 50 teens and young adults" entered a 7-Eleven on the 12000 block of Tech Road in Silver Spring, stole food and drinks, then ran out. Police who responded to the scene were able to detain six of the participants in the crime, but dozens of others were able to flee on foot.

Detectives from the Silver Spring Investigative Section are asking anyone who recognizes any of the people in the video to contact them at 301-565-5835.

  • Dammit, why did I google that?

  • Shiba Fussa

That video looked like an early silent film where the people move really fast

  • Someone definitely needs to add some old-timey honky tonk music to it.  I, for one, am personally offended that DCist did not proactively do this.

  • cminus

I was thinking that it needed "Yakety Sax" as an audio track.

  • Where I grew up, the local 7-Eleven had a rule that no more than 5 kids were allowed in the store at the same time. I don't know how they enforced this but we complied. Kids these days.

  • PutABirdOnIt

Where I grew up, the guy behind the register used to yell whenever kids walked in- HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE? Most of the time, we'd just run out in a panic.

  • Where I grew up, the guy behind the register used to yell, "THIS AIN'T A F**KING LIBRARY!" whenever we flipped throught the comic books. Then we'd just go behind the dumpsters and smoke our medical marijuana and drink Rock Creek Soda.

  • andreamd

When I was a kid(in the 60's!), the guy at the pharmacy would yell at us and threaten to call our parents. I know I bought comic books and magazines- but not from him!

  • cheesenpeas

    Now THAT'S racist.

  • God, teenagers are useless. And this is coming from someone who was a teenager not too long ago. If I met my 15 year old self right now I'd probably wanna slap some sense into him.

  • ms_last_minute

It's ok. I was a teenager once too. Happens to the best of us.

  • Kids these days just have no imagination... when I was their age, we learned how to hack into Wal*Mart's registers and, yaddy yaddy yadda, almost every one of the 500 employees got fired over a two-day span, prompting one of the first non-Christmas continuous Wal*Mart shutdowns in company history.  Good times.

whoa, whoa , whoa. this stuff happens outside the US, too?

  • Morley1

Is it really that hard to do the police work on this one?  Sit in a car outside Paint Branch and Springbrook High School for about 10 minutes and start detaining.  And if they already caught six of them, then they know where they live and where they go to school and can easily find their friends.

Although I'm not sure the charges for stealing a bag of chips and a coke are worth the media attention this is getting.  Oh wait, I get it now.  It's a mob.  Similar to a gang.  And wait a minute, it's even scarier because they are all of a certain race.  No wonder FOX5 led with this last night.  DCist, I expected better.

  • MmmCashews

50 people using social media to steal from a business is newsworthy

  • cheesenpeas

Yeah, this is definitely newsworthy, especially since it's a trend. Reporting a crime doesn't make you racist just because the criminal is black.

  • gtsix

No, but picking on teenagers?  what have they done to deserve... oh....

  • Morley1

Using social media?  How do we know that?  My great sources at FOX5 said they had left a nearby party.  That scene could have happened in 1985, long before the cellphones and the Facebooks and the Tweeters.

  • guestymcspanky

A flash rob is newsworthy, Professor Racebait.

  • I saw a video from back in 1979 where a bunch of kids went and trashed a convenience mart... I think they later went out and smashed some pumpkins; I wasn't too clear on that.

  • lesserlesserwashington

More than one of them is bound to be too stupid to delete the text messages that organized this mob.

  • Pete_eats

The confused looking Hispanic guy at 1:07 is priceless.

  • You know what all those teens had in common? That's right. They could all stand to drop 20lbs. They should consider shoplifting from Whole Foods. I was about to say that when they're caught, they should be forced to do situps, but having to live in Montgomery County is punishment enough.

  • Guest

I'll bet the fat one walking in at 0:38 was one of the kids that didn't get away.

  • DCTransplant

I'm impressed though, no machetes were used!!

  • MyRabbitEars

Back in the day when I worked at Hudson Trail Outfitters, people would come in and buy all of the half-dozen or so machetes we'd have in stock. So a week or two later, we'd restock them. And someone would come in again and buy them all again.

Then someone got attacked with an ice axe at Fort Reno and the police started taking notice of HTO.

  • ex-14thandYou

    Machetes are soooo Takoma Park.

  • PedanticMFr

  • guestymcspanky

I blame the extra 20 pounds on sedentary, non-active transportation.  Also, kids today don't dance enough:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

I ask you, the kids in which video look fitter?

  • There really needs to be a soul train line at the HH.

  • ms_last_minute

I completely and totally agree. With that said, I will be the one watching and not participating :)

  • No cameras means I will participate.

  • wizzyliz
  • In terms of awkwardness, dancing around a maypole wins.

    Gah! Old-timey photos are creepy.

  • PutABirdOnIt

Just don't be the last one at the bottom of the stairs.

  • holy smokes is that gray the vampire at 1:40??

  • his hands were a movin!

  • ms_last_minute

    This.

Please more dancing, more flash mobs...less flash robs.

[Also, did you write the first video comment: "Americans are too fat to dance that way anymore."]

  • lesserlesserwashington

As a MoCo resident, I'm offended someone hasn't gratuitously made a comment about the uniformity of racial demographics of the perps in the video.

  • gtsix

This is not Prince of Petworth.  The commentariot doesn't see race.  Or mirror images of reverse vampires.

  • aldos07

Isn't this place across 29 from a restaurant called Pho Real?  Actually.

  • Agreed. They should consider shoplifting hot bowls of Szechuan tripe soup IN THEIR PANTS.

  • BrandName

Should have lined them all up and pepper sprayed them...

  • Is That Your Bag?

What's the big deal?  Megyn Kelly said pepper spray's basically just a food product.  The cops were just providing supplemental nutrition to the Occupy crowd.  Nothing to see here...

In all honesty, I watched the video and thought "man that is some shitty pepper spray."  I've been maced and pepper-sprayed and that must have been some 2nd tier shit.  They hardly flinched.
