Morning Roundup: Pony Man Edition

Good morning, Washington. Mayor Vince Gray gives his State of the District tonight, but first, today will probably be full of more fallout from the news yesterday that 150 city employees are being investigated for taking home both their regular salaries as well as unemployment benefits.

Dirty Work: For adults without a college degree, Washington can be a rough place to find a good-paying job. But working as a city trash collector is one of them, the Post reports, and there are enviable aspects to it—short hours, great benefits, solid job security. One trash collector followed around by the Post's Annys Shin is Maurice Queen, a 42-year veteran of of the city's trash routes who runs a horse-rental business on the side, stemming from his days as a professional bull rider. They call him the "Pony Man."

Skinny Boxes:: On Housing Complex, Lydia DePillis looks at tiny tract of land in an industrial part of Northeast that a developer wants to turn into a series of narrow townhouses. The number of houses planned has dwindled from 44 to 24 with more space being designated for parking spaces. "But it still looks like a nice project, with three stories on a small footprint and a pleasing backyard space between the homes," DePillis writes.

Third Suspect: While more than 1,000 family members and friends paid tribute to slain civic activist Lenwood "Lenny" Harris yesterday, police in Prince George's County arrested a third suspect in his death, WAMU reports. Harris' body was found in a well in Fort Washington last month after he went missing last September. Harris, who lived in Alexandria, founded the nonprofit Operation HOPE. Police have said his slaying was apparently motivated by a robbery.

Briefly Noted: Former MoonHouse Speaker Newt Gingrich drops ballot challenge in Virginia primary ... Gray and Kwame Brown are fighting over the District's surplus ... Montgomery County students handed "ex-gay" fliers ... TBD reporter has the fanciest day ever ... Jury selection resumes today in University of Virginia lacrosse murder trial ... Two men found dead in New Carrollton this morning ... The real estate listings are so much better in Bethesda.

This Day in DCist: A year ago, cranky fans far and wide voiced their support for the City Paper and Dave McKenna, and Tea Party darling Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) proposed no taxation with no representation for the District. In 2010, so much snow; seriously, so much snow. And just what the hell did they mean by ice dam?

Heh, hear, hear for the DC sanitation workers.  They are the only city service that doesn't absolutely suck!

  • wizzyliz

Have you hugged your sanitation worker today?

  • How about the ones that cleared the dead rats out of Mac-Fear-son?

  • DCTransplant

Brown told Gandhi: “For you to be in cahoots with the mayor is unacceptable.”, "You have to be in cahoots with me too", Fully Loaded added.

  • ADrauglis

On the same page as the trash collectors loving their jobs was a story about people in Virginia retiring from their municipal jobs, getting good pensions, then getting rehired at the same job. I wasn't sure what to make of that or even if it was an intentional pairing

  • Kittyliteral

Here's what I make of it:  double-dipping is bad in DC, good in VA.  It's semantics:  you say unemployment, I say pension.

  • poopieface

There are also municipal employees who retire with the pension and then do "consulting" work with their old agency. It's almost enough to make you sympathize with Republicans. Almost.

  • Kittyliteral

But then you realize they are Republicans.

  • slim_pickens

Sometimes I wish my parents had been greedy aholes who taught me how to abuse the system without one twinge of guilt.

    TBD has reporters now?

Did you by any chance read the article?

  • Didn't bother.

     I wish I hadn't.

  • I find the lack of Occupee DC coverage in this morning's roundup truly appalling. As punishment, I will now sing an old Irish lament that was popular among the ceilis of Swampoodle.

As I was a goin' over the Square they call Muck-fear-sin.
I met with Lash the Hobo and his pee he was collectin'
I first produced me taser which he thought was a fake one
Said "Stand and deliver" for asparagus he was eatin'

    Mush-a ring dum-a do dum-a da
Wack fall the daddy-o, wack fall the daddy-o
    There's urine in the jar.

  • ADrauglis

The coverage will have to end at some point. Be strong, Monkey. If not for the sake of the commentariat, at least for the children

  • Nice try, but until Occupee DC finally forms its "screen-printing guild," you're going to get round-the-clock coverage. And why hasn't the Park Service given back their jars of urine? And what have they done with the Dream Tarp? So many unanswered questions.

  • For sale: Genuine Jar of Urine from the occupation of Mc-fear-son Square.

Own a piece of history! This jar of urine is more than just your passing grade for your next drug test, it's a memento from the world altering Occupy DC movement. This particular jar was created in December of 2011 and is signed and dated by the activist who produced it. It was briefly impounded by NPS officials before being released back to the original owner. Now you can purchase it for the low low price of $99.99. Display it on your mantel as a sign of your support of the 99% and disdain for those fat cat corrupt capitalists. 100% of the proceeds will fund future park destruc--er, "occupations" across the country. Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!

  • Pete_eats

"Disclaimer: jar will definitely not help you pass your next drug test."

  • Joan Arkham

Thanks for the nice intro to the "Pony Man" story, because there was no way in hell I was clicking on that link without knowing what it was about. (I've been on the Internets too long...)

  • I thought it would be about the Preakness mascot from last year.

  • Joan Arkham

Oh, man...I wish I could unsee that one.

  • Another thing worth noting. It's a good thing that the city is cracking down on employees who are "double dipping," but for perspective, they've stolen $800K from the city's coffers. Good. Crack some skulls.

But Doug Jemal owes an order of magnitude more in back taxes, and he still gets praised by various civic organizations as a 'man of the year.'

  • ADrauglis

Jemal always owes back taxes on his properties because there is no penalty for paying them at the last possible second. He (and he can't be the only one) leaves his money in the bank earning interest until a property is about to be auctioned then swoops in and makes good on the bill. Perfectly legal

  • Why would you want to punish a developer who had the foresight to squat on properties for decades? Those "Leasing Now from Douglas Development" signs add lots of value to adjoining properties. They're like a streetcar line without the streetcar line.

Great sports story on Laist. Not to be missed. L.A. Wins 3rd Consecutive Championship

  • poopieface

Awesome. LA does have a football team. And one that actually makes this boring ass sport worth wtaching.

  • No yoga pants = it didn't happen.

  • guestymcspanky

Yoga pants are sluttier than Lingerie Football League uniforms.  If they wore yoga pants I might even watch.

  • ms_last_minute

There is nothing slutty about yoga pants or lingerie, as long as they are worn in the appropriate setting. Thank you.

  • guestymcspanky

Please describe to me the appropriate and non-slutty setting for lingerie; and can you please do it in a Lili Von Shtupp  accent?  Thanks!

Guesty, BITE. YOUR. TONGUE. Mumus are sexy too!

    http://www.mtv.com/news/photos...

  • Pete_eats

If you're discussing the semantics of "slutty" then you're doing it wrong.

  • guestymcspanky

You're the one attaching a negative connotation to "slutty." If there wasn't a slutty quality, even in the bedroom between mutually respected adults, lingerie would be about as sexy as a mumu with bunny slippers.  I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong with slutty.

edit: To clarify, I'm using the word slutty to mean 'intentionally sexually provocative.'

  • ms_last_minute

In the bedroom with your significant other? Nanny C. Prude!

  • Guest

    No. Thank You!

  • Gray and Kwame Brown are fighting over the District's surplus.

She knows what to do with it.

    Hawt!

  • DCTransplant

They can certainly help as well in case Harriet is indisposed at the moment.

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/i...

  • poopieface

One thing I will say about trash collection in DC - it's defintely one of the better municipal services. They actually do their job and respond to requests. At least in my experience.

  • Worth noting that the houses that Lydia wrote about will be built in a residential neighborhood. It's adjacent to land that's zoned industrial, but that's a few hundred feet away and down a steep incline. These houses will actually be built in a relatively secluded, wooded area. I'll bet they actually have a great view to the south and east of downtown and the capitol building.

  • "taking home both their regular salaries as well as unemployment benefits"

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RvNS7...

  • I'm thinking those 150 employess didn't read the DC Ethics Poster, which makes sense seeing as most of them work for the DC Public School System and are therefor illiterate.

    It's the moon.

  • That's no moon.  It's a space station.

  • Guest

    That's no moon. It's a state.

    Fixed it for you.

  • Newhce

I can tell by the pixels.

for taking home both their regular salaries as well as unemployment benefits.

Talk about being proactive, these are the kind of employees DC needs. Even while they had a job, they were preparing for being fired.

  • Gray and Kwame Brown are fighting over the District's surplus

I really hope this involves socks filled with manure and Thunderdome.

  • DCTransplant

Hot Yogurt, the correct answer is hot yogurt, sir.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

    Happy Birthday Chuck!

  • Is That Your Bag?

A big happy birthday to Eddie Izzard, too.  Cake or death???

  • PutABirdOnIt

    Cake please!

  • Is That Your Bag?

    Well, we're OUTTA cake!

  • The Google doodle today was excellent.
