Vacations in D.C. Are Soooo Much Better Than in New York

This week U.S. News and World Report offered its judgment on the 21 best places to take a vacation in the U.S., and the District took second place behind San Francisco. Wrote the magazine:

The nation's capital has a lot going for it. With iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and the world's largest obelisk, the Washington Monument, you can sightsee for days. Exploring one of the free Smithsonian museums is a pleasant way to spend a day but make sure to save some energy for an evening out -- DC has a sweet restaurant and bar scene.
According to the list, we're a more desirable vacation spot than San Diego, New York, Yellowstone or even Maui. A few weeks ago, Travel & Leisure magazine found that the District leads the nation's 33 biggest cities in museums and galleries, placed second in historical sites and monuments and third in terms of cultural offerings.

  • I've been to all of those places except Yellowstone and grew up in New York and though I enjoy living in D.C., I would not say that it is better vacation spot than any of those. Even without having visited Yellowstone, I somehow feel like old buildings can't really compare with nature for vacationing purposes.

This is such a joke!  DC can't be less of a vacation spot if it tried...boring, uninteresting, some decent restaurants in recent years, but basically no style, crappy bars that try too hard....unattractive people...poor shopping, what are the authors thinking????

You forgot to include "everybody there has cooties!" on your list.

Nice picture Bullneck, but if you had moved over a foot or two that tree branch wouldn't be in the way of the memorial.

    * I tried to pull up skits from the Cleveland episode of 30 Rock, but it seems that NBC has purged them from the internet. :(

Having once resided in the not-so-great state of Ohio, I refuse to EVER go back.

    Ah, Ohio

  • Well, duh. A tourist can get by pretty cheap in DC. All the museums and art gallerys on the Mall are free. You can live in tents in Muck-fear-sin Square for months on end. The Starbucks are relatively wif-leeching hobo-friendly. And unlike NYC, you don't have to pay to have sex with men in the train station bathroom.

And every tourist gets their own personal pet name engraved on an authentic jar of urine. Shangry baby!

  • Which leaves NYC with only one notable advantage.

  • And unlike in DC where we create a warm and nurturing environment for rats, NYC continues to abuse them by making them eat Taco Bell. Shame on you, NYC.

  • Accept no substitutes! Only Shangry Brand® Jars of Urine have been endorsed by the Pope and are the Official Beverage of the Arkansas Urine Guzzling Association. Remember: If It Isn't Shangry, It's Probably Lemonade.®

But wait! that's not all! If a tourist shows up in a blue tarp, they get get double the urine ABSOLUTELY FREE!*

    * Just pay separate shipping and handling.

  • **Not a guarantee. Deam Tarp may explode.
