Midwestern Transmissions: Silo Halo Tour Diary Day 1

Midwestern Transmissions: Silo Halo Tour Diary Day 1

Silo Halo is a relatively new name in the local music scene, but we’ve seen Christopher Goett, Greg Svitil and Christin Durham in bands like Girl Loves Distortion, Edie Sedgwick, Victor Victoria and The Antiques. We like that their music can go from an experimental pop groove (think Sonic Youth with samplers) to a gothic and weighty force. We also like that they’re taking a tour outside of the comfort zone of the East Coast. So, since we’d like to get to know them better and we haven’t done a tour diary since These United States five years ago (yipe!) we’ve tasked Silo Halo with sending us some words and photos from the road. more ›

Love. Sweet love. It is a challenge to gaze upon this photo and not think of Kate & Leo on that boat, and hear the sweet, sweet sounds of Celine Dion singing "My Heart Will Go On." Seriously, if pit bulls in drag making out with humans don't inspire the sounds Quebec's greatest export in your heart, nothing will. more ›

Three Stars: Art Sorority for Girls

Three Stars: Art Sorority for Girls

Art Sorority for Girls is unapologetically poppy. While Tyler-Ameen has occasionally played alone, his hooks have the bombast to reach the back of a very large room. If one was to speed up Death Cab For Cutie songs to the velocity of Voxtrot songs and combine the lyrical acuity of the two, you'd have a standard Art Sorority For Girls song. Besides, as anyone in this transient city can attest, leaving a former home may feel like cheating on that city with a new place, but Tyler-Ameen actually turned that sentiment into a likable and relatable pop song. Most of his songs play out similarly, taking some sour young adult experiences and sentiments and turning them into easily digestible fare. more ›

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. In Mexico, the celebration has more significance in the state of Puebla, where it's called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla, the day when the underdog Mexican army defeated the French forces. But in the U.S., it's more about Mexican pride...and good deals on margaritas. more ›
