A pose fit for an action figure: Nicklas Backstrom beat Canadiens goaltender Carey Price glove side to win the overtime shootout in Montreal last night. (AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Graham Hughes)

Capitals 4, Canadiens 3 (OT): The Caps let a two-goal lead after the first slip away, but managed to come back with strong goaltending by Semyon Varlamov, Eric Fehr's heroics, and Nicklas Backstrom's tricky move in the overtime shootout to win in Montreal. A Fehr backhander and a pretty one-timer from Alex Ovechkin staked the Caps to a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes, but Jaroslav Spacek, Tomas Plekanec, and Travis Moen scored unanswered goals to take the lead back for Montreal. For once, it was the opposition's lack of third period discipline which factored into a Caps result -- Fehr scored his second of the game with 11 ticks left, after Paul Mara was called for high-sticking but ten seconds earlier. Varlamov then stopped all three shootout attempts, leaving Backstrom to strike the iconic pose seen above. At November's end, the Caps find themselves in first place in the East, two points behind San Jose for the league lead -- it's not too early to ask whether or not these Caps will redeem the currently morose Washingtonian sports landscape, is it?

Bobcats 92, Wizards 76: Remember when we said last night that the Wizards needed more cohesive team performances if they were going to get things back on track this season? Well, that didn't mean that the entire team could slack off. Any time an NBA team only scores 76 in a game, you could probably assume that it was an ugly game, and so it was -- especially against Charlotte, who may just be one of the least thrilling teams to ever win four straight games: the Bobcats are second to last in scoring, first in scoring defense. A first half in which the Wizards were outscored, outrebounded, and outplayed was too much to overcome. Back to square one, I guess.

Obamas At Smith Center For G.W. Basketball Game

(AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

It's been a busy couple of weeks at the White House. The Obamas held their first state dinner complete with party crashers. The Commander-in-Chief pardoned his first turkey. The official White House Christmas tree arrived on Friday, and next Thursday, the Obamas are scheduled to light the National Tree on the Ellipse. And, of course, the President has surely been preparing for the announcement his future plans for the war in Afghanistan on Tuesday at West Point.

So who can blame the leader of the free world for wanting to kick back, relax, and take in some college hoops?

Michelle Obama's brother, Craig Robinson, brought his Oregon State charges to D.C. for a game against George Washington, and the Obama family decided to make a day of it. The Obamas are sitting front row -- our own Andrew Wiseman is in attendance and has a different perspective of where the First Family is seated in the half-empty arena. It's the second time that Obama has ventured out to watch a basketball game in the city -- he went to a Wizards game in March.

As far as the game goes, the President has to be pleased that his advice to the Beavers -- "be loose, have fun" -- had them leading by ten at halftime.

One particularly Puritanical section of the law does not allow tax-paying, law-abiding Marylanders to have wine shipped to their homes. Thankfully, there appear to be more level-headed individuals among those who produce and enjoy a good Pinot than in the state's General Assembly.

The Baltimore Sun reported yesterday that wine-lovers and wine producers are going all in on a reform measure which would simplify the overly-convoluted manner in which wine gets from a vineyard to a glass in the Old Line State. (Similar legislation failed to get out of committee in 2008.) Predictably, there's a quite a bit of hot air being blown about the Assembly as to a) how such a measure would make it easier for minors to obtain some Cabernet and b) that there's more important things for the Assembly to address.

Any state's legislative body will always have more pressing issues on its plate, sure. That's hardly an excuse to stall progress. But the somebody think of the children! excuse is about as lame as it gets. After all, how many sixteen-year-old kids do you know that are looking to drop a few hundred to get loaded on a dozen bottles of some fine Bordeaux? Once you realize that there's a lot of distributors out there who make very good money as the middleman between you and the product, the real purpose behind such ballyhooing becomes a whole lot clearer.

Of course, if Maryland does pass the connoisseurs' proposal, it would strike a serious blow for those of us in the District who have gotten accustomed to taking a cut of every wine shipment that we find funneling through our addresses to thirsty Maryland residents. Bah, a sacrifice in the name of greater liberty, I suppose.

Car Pushed Into Anacostia River By Train

A vehicle which had parked on train tracks was pushed into the Anacostia River by a CSX locomotive in Southeast Washington early this morning. The incident occurred on the 1900 block of M Street SE -- the street runs parallel to the rail tracks, but stops short of crossing the river. Around 5:45 a.m., the vehicle was struck by an outbound freight train and nudged off the bridge, coming to rest in about 1-2 feet of water as the train derailed. Police and fire department investigators found no signs of fuel spillage into the river. Additionally, the car was unoccupied and no one was seriously injured. The accident location is in close proximity to the Seafarers Boat Club at 1950 M Street SE, but there's no word yet as to why the individual decided to park their car on the train tracks.

Are you really ready to reenter a world in which eating open-faced turkey sandwiches, watching college football rivalry games and hitting the recliner for numerous naps are not the top three things on your to do list? Of course you aren't. Fortunately for you, it's Saturday, and the aforementioned luxuries are still in sufficient supply.

Don't worry, you can hide from the work-a-day world for a couple more days. We won't tell anyone.

Let's take a brief trip around the news, shall we?

>> Shopping anywhere yesterday was a disaster, duh. Speaking of Black Friday, The Washington Humane Society apparently had a sale yesterday. Of course, we're only mentioning this so that we can link again to Meghan Gay's adorable photographs. (Squee.)

>> Frozen Tropics has the word on the resignation of ANC 5B06 Commissioner Wilhelmina Lawson -- and the details for those interested in taking the vacant seat.

>> Helpful: The City Paper has aggregated all of its extensive Pershing Park case coverage into one convenient little site.

Devendra Banhart played to a half-full 9:30 Club on Wednesday night, achieving occasional moments of brilliance, but generally failing to create the spirited vibe that often energizes his live shows. Indeed, it was the night before Thanksgiving, but performers and audience alike seemed already mired in a tryptophan-induced state of torpor. As if in acknowledgment that the slightest distraction might prove critical in such an anemic environment, photographers were relegated to the margins of the venue, though this arguably succeeded only in ensuring that there would be scant visual evidence of the evening’s somewhat lackluster proceedings.

That said, the hirsute avant-folk singer-songwriter did deliver a few musical highlights, mostly when he played songs from his major-label debut, What Will We Be. Three songs into the set came a lively rendition of the lilting pop gem “Baby,” with its goofy puppy-love lyrics and pretty guitar melodies. “Angelika” began as a delicate acoustic ballad before swerving into Tropicalia-inflected grooves and incantations, while “16th and Valencia, Roxy Music” evocatively conjured a typically strange San Francisco night despite a slightly languid, slowed-down arrangement. Banhart’s four-piece backing band, The Grogs, provided commendable, understated support through most of the concert, though the show’s momentum waned considerably when the frontman generously allowed the musicians to perform a few of their own songs. A couple of lengthy instrumental jams towards the end of the set also tested patience. At some of his performances, Banhart has been known to invite fans on-stage for impromptu dance parties, but by the conclusion of Wednesday’s 90-minute set, the sparse crowd’s flagging attention left little need or opportunity to do so.

Big guns Gilbert Arenas (who had never won a game against Dwyane Wade in his professional career before Friday) and Caron Butler were both kept in single digits, the former left on the bench for the last 14 minutes of the game. But while Agent Zero struggled to find his rhythm, Wade also looked flat. (Perhaps he was still fatigued after the Heat's dramatic win over Orlando on Thanksgiving eve.) Lacking Wade's usual fire, Mario Chalmers tried to pick up the slack for Miami with 18 second-half points. But Jamison was the real star of the night, continuing his torrid play after missing the first nine games of the season. With 24 points and 13 rebounds, Jamison surpassed the 16,000 point plateau for his career. Guard Nick Young also impressed: sure, the 22 points and five assists were nice, but his defense on Wade -- whether the superstar was tired or not -- was exceptional. These kinds of cohesive team efforts will be needed if the Wizards hope to right the ship after the team's disappointing start.

FRIDAY

JAZZ: If you have family in town, taking them to the Jazz Night in Southwest could be a good inexpensive activity. Tonight trombonist Bobby Felder will assemble a large band for 6-9 p.m. show. $5. For more jazz highlights this weekend, check out our This Week in Jazz post.

MUSIC: Since it's the last Friday of the month, "AfroBeat For Ya Soul" is on at its new location, Bossa, with DJ Underdog spinning. He'll be trading sets with Three Stars alum Will Rast and his band, Funk Ark. $5, 10 p.m.

Or at the 9:30 Club, you can absorb some lo-fi literary folk rock and experimental violin jams with The Mountain Goats and Final Fantasy, 8 p.m., $20.

MOVIE: Considered by many to be the worst film ever made, The Room is the midnight movie selection at the Landmark E Street this weekend. Writer/director Tommy Wiseau lately tries to play it like he made the movie, a cult sensation since the early '00s, that badly on purpose, but the earnestness with which he delivers lines like, "You're tearing me apart, Lisa!" make that a little tough to believe. Don't be afraid to crack jokes and shout back at the screen. Also Saturday.

SATURDAY

MUSIC: D.C.'s own Afrofunk orchestra, Chopteeth, will jam at the Black Cat. Always a good time. $15, 9 p.m.

The afternoon kids show is sold-out, but tickets are still available for the later, adult-oriented They Might Be Giants show at the 9:30 Club. $25, doors 8 p.m.

MOVIE: The National Gallery of Art is screening Joseph Losey's 1964 film King and Country, about an army private accused of desertion during battle. 3:30 p.m. East Building Concourse Auditorium, free.

MUSEUM: The Smithsonian American Art Museum hosts a multimedia scavenger hunt called Ghost of a Chance; bring your cell phones and register between 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. for the hunt, which lasts between 2:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. Free.

ART: Catch a glimpse of China's underground music scene through the photos of Matthew Niederhauser before they leave the Govinda Gallery, free 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

SUNDAY

MOVIE: AFI Silver will screen a special 35mm print of Some Like it Hot, named the number one comedy in the history of film by the AFI in 2000. 4:45 p.m., $10.
Here's to hoping everyone had a great Thanksgiving, doesn't have to work today and didn't have to fend off crowds of shoppers hellbent on getting that one flat-screen TV for 50 percent off.

Three Shot in Columbia Heights: The Post is reporting that on early Thursday morning three men were shot, one fatally, in Columbia Heights. (I'll be the picky one to point out that the location of the shooting, the 700 block of Harvard Street, isn't really Columbia Heights, though.)

Cracks Found in Farragut North Metro Station: The Examiner writes that cracks have been found in the ceiling of the Farragut North Metro station, one stretching as far as 15 feet. According to Metro officials, water from a sewer pipe has been leaking into the station. Repairs are to start soon, though Metro hasn't said how long they will take. Service at the station will not be affected.

Light Up One Last Time in Virginia: If you live in Virginia, this weekend will be the last until a statewide smoking ban for bars takes effect on December 1, reminds WTOP.

Briefly Noted: White House crashers posed no threat to Obama ... More on the Fenty poll: African Americans don't like him, whites are content with his performance.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2008, complaints over D.C. parking meters were way up. In 2007, Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died from a gunshot wound.

The Ballou Senior High School Majestic Knights marching band, under the direction of leader Darrell Watson, are the pride of D.C. today after their performance in the Macy's annual Thanksgiving Parade. Ballou's band is a D.C. institution that has even inspired a documentary, and they are the first school from the District ever to perform in the parade. The students have been preparing for this performance since their selection was first announced in April of last year, practicing and fundraising for their trip to New York. The band performed a tribute to Michael Jackson called, "It's a Thriller." Enjoy the clip below, courtesy of NBC, and congratulations on a job well done to Mr. Watson, the fantastic musicians and dancers, and their families!

Semyon Varlamov earned his first shutout of the season Wednesday night, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

The Caps -- who had dropped three straight games and four of their last five -- were nursing a one-goal lead in the third against Buffalo Wednesday night, when Alex Ovechkin was called for a five minute boarding penalty after a hit on Patrick Kaleta and given a game ejection for misconduct with 16:22 left. But with the pressure on, the Caps' penalty kill, with Varlamov anchoring, came through twice: first during Ovechkin's lengthy penalty, and then during a Mike Green delay of game penalty later in the period. Eventually, Eric Fehr found the net to push the score to 2-0 and seal the win.

Head coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters afterward he'd already watched the clip of Ovechkin's hit "half a dozen" times and thought it warranted, at most, a two-minute minor.

"He hits him in the shoulder, and Kaleta saw him coming," Boudreau said, adding that Kaleta cries wolf frequently.

Caps center Jay Beagle had a similar take.

"[Ovechkin] made a great hit, I thought -- the guy just kind of turned," Beagle said.

Ovechkin was diplomatic when asked if he thought it was a penalty.

"If the ref decide[s] to give me a penalty, it's a penalty," Ovechkin said.

The prolific forward said there wasn't anything between him and Kaleta and that he was just finishing a check -- and, in typical Ovie-style, confirmed he'll continue to play his game.

"I'm not gonna change," Ovechkin said.

"I think it spurred our team on to, for once, let's come to [Ovechkin's] defense," Boudreau said of the Caps' ensuing penalty kills.

Though the Caps' offense started out slow (it took till 8:27 left in the first period for them to get two shots on goal), Ovechkin helped out with a nice goal in the first on a wicked wrist shot, his 17th of the season. Varlamov remained strong at the other end, where it certainly seemed like he stopped double the 25 shots on goal Buffalo ended up with at the end of the third. Verizon Center rocked with chants of 'Varly,' and the goaltender received the first star of the game.

"Varly was solid. It was like he was saying, 'I'm not letting this happen to me again in the third period,'" Boudreau said.

The Caps will take today off before going on the road Saturday at Montreal.

Jail, according to a report from WTTG/FOX5. Josue Pena, 26, had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Fuentes, who died after being shot through the door of his Columbia Heights apartment. The Washington Post reported earlier that paramedics had been called to the jail for a call of an unconscious inmate this afternoon. WTTG says Pena was found hanged inside his cell just after 1 p.m. He was pronounced dead later at Howard University Hospital, with the cause of death determined to be cardiac arrest by asphyxiation. The report also includes these details:
Pena told prosecutors he had a gun in his waist band, but it accidently went off as he walked up the stairs.

Court documents indicate police also found the murder weapon, a .22 caliber revolver at his uncle's home on Kenyon Street NW. One tenant at the home with a 2-week-old baby says the suspect was there Saturday an hour after the shooting looking for a place to stay.
WTOP says Pena's death is under investigation.

MTV has posted the first trailer for The Real World DC on its web site. It includes a number of establishing shots of our fair city (including, inexplicably, an intro featuring President Barack Obama exiting Marine One to the tune of the Civil War-era song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," aka "The Ants Go Marching," ... maybe the producers confused it with "Hail to the Chief"?), and there are a couple of fun scenes showing off the D.C. locale: one of the cast members meeting Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), another playing around in the White House briefing room, that kind of thing. But most of the storylines that are teased are pretty much standard Real World fare: hook-ups, young people unsure of who they are or what they'll do with their lives, and of course, girls running around with their tops off.

President Obama Pardons the White House Turkey

President Barack Obama pardoned his first White House turkey, Courage, a little while ago. The White House has since released video of the ceremony (see below), during which Obama called Courage "a good looking bird." The president was in a joking mood, noting that "there are days when I'm reminded why I ran for this office ... and then there are days like this, when you pardon a turkey and send it Disneyland."

Obama also announced that the entire Obama family will be heading to D.C. non-profit Martha's Table this afternoon to deliver a few turkeys, reminding us once again that the Obamas have made a point of getting involved with local groups like virtually no other first family.

Funnier still is this preview video of the ceremony, put together by White House staff:

There's Something About Lulu

Angel Torres and Sara Barker in Washington Shakespeare's production of Lulu. Photo by C. Stanley Photography.
Lulu is bad news. Don't believe me? Just take a glance at the couch that resides immediately in front of front row, center, in Washington Shakespeare Company's production of this Nicholas Wright-penned mashed-up adaptation of two notorious Frank Wedekind plays. There you'll find the trail of broken hearts and broken bodies the seductress leaves in her wake, in the form of dead husbands — one per act of this bloody, bawdy play — forced to sit there and watch helplessly after she has heartlessly dispatched them.

The Dead Man's Couch is one of a number of nice touches in director Christopher Henley's highly stylized production, which also includes expressionistic flourishes in the cartoon-surreal set, highly mannered performances, and a backlit scrim where Lulu's costume changes happen in suggestive silhouettes. A soundtrack featuring the Kurt Weill-meets-Billboard Hot 100 stylings of German bandleader Max Raabe tops things off nicely, but none of it seems enough to save a text that is overlong and begins to get repetitive somewhere in the second act as we march past the two-hour mark. Lulu's pattern is well established by this point: marry rich, take on obsessed lovers, and replace the former with the latter when the current husband has met his violent end. Rinse, repeat.

Wright's adaptation takes Wedekind's two Lulu plays (Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box, which were adapted for the cinema and the opera in the 20s and 30s) and fuses them into one piece that finds Lulu bouncing from German and French high society to a life of prostitution in London where, for lack of a better way to end her saga, she meets up with Jack the Ripper. Wedekind's work was already boundary-pushing at the turn of the 20th century, and Wright makes explicit some of the material the original author was forced to just suggest. The result is a violent, highly sexualized piece that has Sara Barker, in the title role, writhing around on chairs, chaise lounges, and the floor, in between pouting coquettishly and initiating mortal misfortune.

But for a play with enough blood, love and rhetoric to do Shakespeare proud, Lulu is an oddly tedious exercise. By the time James Finley (as Jack) bursts from a back room fully nude and covered head to toe in blood, what should be an electrifying moment just has the audience stealing surreptitious glances at their watches.

WSC's production employs a huge cast of more than two dozen actors, some of whom must still pull double and triple duty to portray the multitudes that are inexorably drawn to the irresistible Lulu. Barker does what she can with a character possessing rather inscrutable motivations apart from the basic lust for wealth and security. As sexual as she is outwardly, one suspects this is little more than a front to get her what she really desires. She can talk about living for carnal delights all she wants, but her response to the simple question posed by a Countess is far more revealing. "Do you never indulge?" she is asked after turning down a cigarette. "Not for pleasure," she responds.

The play is filled with lines like this, double entendres and buried meanings. The word play provides much of the pleasure for the audience, but there's just not enough to carry a show that suffers from both too much plot and not enough variety. Lulu's character needs to draw us in just as hypnotically as she does her many suitors. Instead, we find ourselves waiting for her to finally join her husbands on the couch.

Lulu runs through December 13 at Washington Shakespeare Company. Tickets are available online.

>> Inspired by the jazz program on Voice of America, trumpeter Valery Ponomarev grew up in the Soviet Union with dreams of playing with Art Blakey's famous Jazz Messengers. Ponomarev defected to the States in the 1970s, and eventually fulfilled his ambitions, spending several years with the legendary drummer. He will be leading his own group on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz, where he will also be signing his autobiography, The Flip Side of Sound. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $15 + $12 minimum/surcharge.

DCist's highly subjective and hardly comprehensive guide to the most interesting movies playing around town in the coming week.

  The Room

There are a lot of bad movies out there. Most fade into obscurity, as what makes them so awful is that they're simply forgettable wastes of time. Yet every now and then a bad movie comes along that becomes a timeless classic based solely on its staggering ineptitude. These films set the standard by which all other bad films of their time or genre will be judged. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians may be bad, but it still can't reach the depths of Plan 9 From Outer Space. And as cringeworthy as Ernest Borgnine and William Shatner are in The Devil's Rain, that film is Citizen Kane when put up next to Manos: The Hands of Fate. And so it is with The Room, which does for indie dramas what Plan 9 did for alien invasions and Manos did for satanic cults: demonstrate, hilariously, exactly how not to make these kinds of movies.

What makes these films truly fascinating – for longer than the unintended hilarity alone would warrant – is the thought that there are artists with personalities so strong and visions so clear that they can actually see these films through to completion. So, into the pantheon that includes Ed Wood and Harold P. Warren, let's also admit Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, star, producer, and executive producer of The Room. And, based on these interviews conducted by the Onion A.V. Club and LAist, either a certified nutjob, or a modern-day Andy Kaufman.

Wiseau plays Johnny, a regular guy with a heart of gold and the most improbable head of hair ever found on a banker. His fiancée is a fickle creature, who no longer loves him. We know this because she tells her mother this fact in nearly every other scene, as if it's brand new information. Her mother may have other things on her mind, though; as she mentions offhandedly in one scene, she's just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Not that we ever hear mention of that seemingly important piece of information again. This just scratches the surface of the funhouse mirror of nonsense that is The Room, a cult hit on the west coast finally making it to E Street's midnight movie series for the next two weekends. This is best seen with a crowd, otherwise you might not believe that you just saw a pickup game of football in which four characters are inexplicably wearing tuxedos. Or a timeline that doesn't seem to follow conventional rules of time and space. Or a priceless scene in which one character is nearly murdered and admits to owing money to drug dealers, but, like mom's cancer, it is never brought up again. The list could go on and on. Cinematic travesties this complete only happen once in a generation.

Friday and Saturday at midnight, this weekend and next weekend at E Street.

La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet

Prolific documentarian Frederick Wiseman's latest film is a sprawling, 2 hour and 40 minute immersion in the Paris Ballet. Wiseman's signature style, which seeks to drop the viewer into a foreign situation and have the same experience he did while he was there, without narration or explanation, makes for something like cinéma vérité, only Wiseman fully admits to influencing the proceedings by the presence of his crew. Much of the film is devoted to rehearsals and performance footage, as Wiseman watches the ballet prepare and present seven different works, making it both an excellent primer for ballet novices, and a visual feast for aficionados.

Opens Friday for only five days at the AFI. If you miss their run, The Avalon is picking it up on December 4.

---

  Some Like It Hot

For a director as consistently accessible and brilliant as Billy Wilder, it's hard to pick a favorite film (though I usually default to The Apartment). Some Like It Hot is always a top contender for that title, and was named the number one comedy in the history of film by the AFI in 2000. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon play a pair of musicians on the run from the mob after witnessing a murder. But the only job they can find open outside of Chicago is with an all girl traveling band fronted by Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), so the two get all dolled up for the trip, and both fall hard for Sugar. Hilarity, as one would expect, ensues. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film, the AFI is screening a brand new 35mm print.

Opens today at the AFI and runs until Sunday.

Feel like something a little more bloody for the Thanksgiving holiday? The AFI is also screening a brand new print of this writer's favorite scary movie, Stanley Kubrick's epic adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining. Elevators of blood and Jack Nicholson await, starting today for one week.

---

Fantastic Mr. Fox

In making his first animated children's film, Wes Anderson has been no less idiosyncratic than is his habit. He wrote much of the script (with Noah Baumbach) from the same office on the Dahl estate in which Roald Dahl wrote the original book. That book serves as the middle third of the film, as Anderson and Baumbach expanded the brief tale into a story about a fox who gives up his dangerous days of raiding farms in favor of a more family-friendly life as a newspaper man before being tempted back into a life of crime; his actions prompt retaliation by the farmers that threatens the entire animal community. Once production started, Anderson continued doing things rather differently, recording the actors' voices on location at a farm in Connecticut rather than a studio, insisting on old fashioned animation techniques that would draw attention to the animation itself, and acting out scenes from his offices in Paris to send to the animators in England. His cinematographer, Tristan Oliver, famously made disparaging comments about his director's leadership by video conference in a hatchet-job article in the L.A. Times last month, including claiming the director to be a "little bit of a sociopath." Ouch. Since then they've publicly ironed things out, but Anderson may get the last laugh in any case: he might have directed from a different country, but Fox is garnering him some of the best reviews he's received since Rushmore.

Opens today at theaters all over the area.

---

The Road

The big question mark for this adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's tough and tender tale of a father and son traveling through a post-apocalyptic America is whether or not the Weinsteins let director John Hillcoat make the best film possible. HIllcoat, director of the bleak and brilliant Aussie western The Proposition, is the perfect choice to direct this film, and while his go-to star Guy Pearce might have cut a more effectively gaunt figure as a starving man, I can't really argue with Viggo Mortenson in his place. But puzzlingly, the trailers make it look like Mad Max & son, and it seems odd for the producers to cut the trailer to make it look like an action movie, when the source material was an Oprah-backed mega-bestseller in McCarthy's dark and pander-free original form. Hopefully the film itself will retain the author's somber tone, which is what one would expect from Hillcoat. But with the Weinstein name on the opening credits, you should still brace yourself for the potential editing room ambush, and hope for the best.

Police say the suspect in question may be responsible for the Nov. 21 attempted robbery of a Bank of America branch in the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue NW, and a Nov. 14 robbery of a PNC Bank branch in the 3300 block of 14th Street NW.

In both cases, the suspect produced a note demanding money, though in the Bank of America incident, he ultimately fled the scene without obtaining anything.

The suspect is described as an adult male, between 25 and 30 years-old, of an unknown race with a light complexion, between 5'11" and 6'1", and 180 to 200 pounds. In one of the cases, the suspect was reportedly wearing a red “running “ type jacket with black thin stripes along the front, a black skull cap and light colored jeans. In the other case, he wore a black jacket with a white, red and yellow abstract design on the front of it.

Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIM [E] (2746). Anonymous information may also be forwarded to DC Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS and by text messaging 50411.

Good morning, Washington. Given that the Metro system was already unusually full by yesterday afternoon, we're guessing that D.C. is going to be a bit of a ghost town today. If you're unlucky enough to still be stuck in the office, we hope the empty halls and cubicles at least provide a peaceful day before you cut out early.

Pollin Remembered: The Post has a lengthy and glowing reflection on the life and career of the just-passed Abe Pollin: sports franchise owner, philanthropist, real estate developer and longtime Washingtonian. It's nearly enough to make you forget the ridiculousness of the Wizards' name! It's worth a read, as is Harry Jaffe's brief piece on Pollin in the Examiner.

Motivations for K Street Disruption Remain Unknown: As you probably remember, yesterday a man parked a van in the middle of K Street, climbed on top, demanded 200 million dollars and began throwing molotov cocktails. It was... unusual. Details on his motivation are still in short supply, but Fox 5 at least lets us know that the man's name is Kyung Song Kil, and that he said he was owed the money for "harassment."

Briefly Noted: 71 year-old questioned about "bizarre kissing incidents"... Arrest made in '97 murder case thanks to enhanced surveillance tape (NBC4 claims credit)... Barry's turkey giveaway unable to meet demand... Arrest made in death of 84 year-old man... P.G. County government cancels go-go show...

This Day In DCist: One year ago K Street suffered a dim-witted criminal and we offered some turkey-frying tips.

Fans of the restaurant will be relieved that the Redds say they are planning on opening in another location as soon as they find one.

We're writing with some unfortunate news. Vegetate on 9th Street is going to be closing at the end of this month. Our lease is up and we've decided to look for a new location.

We will let all of you know once we've found a new space. In the meantime, we'll be doing select catered events.

Thank you for all your support over the years. Those of you in the area, please stop by for one last dinner at Vegetate's 9th Street home.

Best,
    Dominic & Jennifer

In addition to owning the Wizards, the Mystics and the Capitals, Pollin's work in developing the real estate deal that became the Verizon Center and Gallery Place retail complex has largely been credited with turning D.C.'s Chinatown neighborhood around.

Pollin was also a longtime Washingtonian, having graduated from George Washington University in 1945.

From D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's statement:

"Today the District of Columbia has lost one of our greatest treasures. Abe Pollin almost single-handedly revitalized the Gallery Place / Chinatown neighborhood by turning down offers from suburban jurisdictions to finance and build the Verizon Center on 7th Street NW. My deepest condolences go out to Mr. Pollin’s family, most especially his wife Irene, who was always his partner, in sports, construction, philanthropy, and of course, family."

Jantzen

In a blow to the Washington Teachers' Union, the D.C. Superior Court today rejected the union's bid to reinstate the 266 teachers who were fired by DCPS in October. The teachers were laid off as part of a large reduction in force (RIF) that DCPS has maintained was necessitated by a $4.4 million budget shortfall. According to the Post, Judge Judith Bartnoff argued that the WTU failed to prove any of their allegations against Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, specifically that, "the RIF was not a budget-driven layoff but an illegal mass firing, and that the shortfall cited by Rhee was a sham and a pretext for dumping older teachers."

In her opinion, Judge Bartnoff wrote that,

"At most, the plaintiff showed that a large number of teachers were hired in the spring and summer of 2009, which DCPS does not dispute. But the plaintiff presented no evidence to refute the evidence presented by DCPS that its budget included those new teachers at the time they were hired, as well as the returning teachers, that DCPS was planning for the new school year based on the budget that was passed in early June and its budget agreement with the Council Chairman, and that the RIF was instituted in response to the $21 million budget reduction enacted by the City Council on July 31."

In response, the WTU has called an emergency meeting for all RIF'd teachers. The layoffs renewed tensions between Rhee and the WTU, and were the subject of a marathon 18-hour City Council hearing last month.

Man Stops Traffic at 17th and K to Demand $200 Million

UPDATE 3:49 p.m. Traffic is moving again on K Street NW. Police have concluded their preliminary investigation, moved the van out of the street, and cleared the area.

UPDATE 3:12 p.m.: K Street remains closed between 17th & 18th Streets NW. Police are still on the scene conducting a search of the man's vehicle, which is a U-Haul van.

UPDATE: WUSA9 has a few more details now, including that the guy apparently threw a couple of Molotov cocktails while he was up on the van. Also note that the intersection remains closed while police investigate.

Police got there and were trying to get him off of the van until DC Fire got there with a step ladder. At that point, DC Police got on top of the van and were able to convince the man to come down.

At this time, the intersection is still closed down as officials investigate the van and make sure there is nothing harmful inside of it.

DCist reader Thad A. was kind enough to send in this photo of the single protester who managed to stop traffic at 17th and K Streets NW for a short while today. His signage indicates he's demanding "Justice" and "$200 million" – anyone who was down there hear him explain that any further? Was this a bailout-related outburst, or more of a personal financial crisis?

We hear the guy was moved out of the way a little while ago, so traffic should hopefully return to normal on K Street shortly. MPD and D.C. Fire/EMS are still on the scene trying to restore order.

For years I had read that Georgetown student hangout The Tombs served one of the better burgers in the city, and for years I meant to put that claim to the test. But a trek to G'Town for a bite at a subterranean college bar owned by the Clyde's Restaurant Group? I always found something better to do. When I finally visited, I discovered something even better than cooked-to-order burgers, which were juicy thick ones that do indeed live up to their reputation.

The discounted "Study Snacks" menu takes effect every night at 10 p.m., and Monday through Friday afternoons from 3-5 p.m. Items are grouped by price, with the aforementioned cheeseburger in the big bucks category, at $5.95. Cooked to the requested medium rare, irregularly shaped, and with juices oozing, my first Tombs burger was what I'm looking for in a proper patty. Quality can be inconsistent, however. On another visit, the burger was a little overcooked and underseasoned, and inexplicably topped with shredded (and only partially melted) cheese. Buffalo chicken and jack & bacon chicken sandwiches are both well executed, as is a Gardenburger that is just the freezer variety, but cleans up well with toppings and a side of onion rings. All of the cheapie sandwiches come with a generous, crispy serving of fries. But you'd be wise to trade those out for their perfectly made golden onion rings. The onion strip does not slide limply out of its batter upon first bite, the sign of a proper frying.

I didn' know about the discounted menu on my first visit, and was kicking myself for arriving at 9:30, 30 minutes before Study Snack Time. The full price burger doesn't exactly burn a hole in your wallet, so after 10 p.m. I put in for an order of well-coated, but greasy nachos. With the discounted prices it's hard to resist piling on a mix and match of junk food, and standard fried fare (buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers) is all on offer. After a burger, the popular Tombs Brownie, served with a glop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and almond slivers makes for a much better dessert.

A nightly Blue Plate Special (also $5.95) makes it enticing to make strategic choices for return visits. Waiters try to pick up Monday night shifts to make a meal of meatloaf night. A cut of the thick, slightly dry (in a good way) comfort food is a good reason to come in for a late night dinner, though the mashed potatoes the slab is served with weren't quite warm enough and the green beans a bit undercooked. Fajita night Wednesday brings a sizzling skillet and a heaping plate of toppings, but the chicken is under-seasoned. Those itching for Thanksgiving will find turkey with the fixins' every Thursday.

Pitchers of cheap beer come standard at any hour, as low as $9 for Rolling Rock. All specialty cocktails from an extensive list are $8, not bargain basement, but not bad considering you're liable to pay close to that much for a rail gin and tonic at any other place in Georgetown. Fair warning: you'll see your fair share of students downing sludge green colored shots of unspecified origins.

Also available is a 20-bottle wine list, well-priced at $20. But if you're looking to go on a spending spree with dad's credit card, the full wine list of 1789 Restaurant, (also operated by the Clyde’s group), is available.

There’s plenty of people watching to go along with your study snack. One Monday night I find myself in the middle of pub trivia night, where a “palindrome” round starts things off. I can’t think of one for “a kingly brew” or any of the other impossible questions. One Saturday, an undergrad and his MacBook rock the house with an eclectic mix that can transition from Lady Gaga to Annie Lennox. My group grabs a pitcher of cheap beer to take in the action and even brave our way out to the dance floor. Cheers to pretending we're still in college!

But whether or not you truly have business hanging out at a campus bar, keep your driver's license handy. Even if you're well settled in with drinks in hand, a bouncer will walk back through at 10 p.m. to recheck IDs and stamp hands. If you forget your ID and go home to get it, the bar will give you a free beer. But no ID, no evening entry.

Couple of headlines on local crime trends from the broadcast outlets worth looking at today.

First up is WRC/NBC4's story from last night on snatch 'n' grab robberies on Metro, but given that "special" NBCWashington.com treatment this morning by calling it, "Metro Opens Doors ... For Robbers." Scared yet? Of course you are, but don't worry, the story is really about how robbers are targeting Metro commuters to make quick grabs for purses, cell phones and iPods, not about WMATA inviting thieves into the system with open arms. Although we suppose that distinction is up for debate.

We're pretty confident that this WRC story was inspired by a couple of recent blog posts, but these sorts of robberies are by no means new to Metro, so if it really is getting even worse, we're glad to know about it. NB: Metro Transit Deputy Police Chief David Webb openly suggests on camera that the seats closest to the train doors are the least safe, making us wonder whether keeping them reserved for the disabled and elderly is really the best call.

Second is this WTTG/FOX 5 piece on "kick-in robberies" in Takoma. These brazen home invasion crimes are reportedly happening in the middle of the day.

Burglars go to the front door and boldly announce the crime. It's happened three times in the city in the last week-- twice just doors away from Nathan Humphrey and his family's home.

"When they don't get a response, they kick in the door. They went upstairs and yelled, 'Burglary alert!'" said Nathan Humphrey as he explained one incident.

Decidedly worrisome, and a good reminder to use a security gate and keep it locked at all times.

MOVIE: The Alliance Française, in partnership with the Bureau de Quebec, presents a screening of Claude Meunier's romantic comedy, Le Grand Départ / Honey, I’m in Love, about a man who leaves his monotonous wife for a much younger woman, but soon begins to wonder if the choice has really left him happier. At the Letelier Theater, 7 p.m., tickets are $9.

The Washington Psychotronic Film Society is back at the Warehouse tonight for a special Thanksgiving-themed offering. Brad F. Grinter and Steve Hawkes's 1972 schlockfest Blood Freak concerns a man who turns into a giant turkey. 8 p.m., $2 suggested donation.

MUSIC: D.C.-based The Snark Ensemble (named after Lewis Carroll's epic poem, The Hunting of the Snark), makes their name by creating original scores to vintage silent films. Tonight at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, their performance will include scores for Laurel & Hardy's Liberty and Charley Chase's Publicity Pays and Hello Baby. Free, 6 p.m.

Or head to the Black Cat for their celebration of the re-release of Dischord's vinyl versions of the Gray Matter classics Food for Thought and Take it Back . Dante and Geoff will also be spinning tunes by their favorite D.C. bands, and if you just happen to have played on any of their chosen records, Dante says he'll buy you a drink. Free, 8 p.m.

FOOD & DRINK: Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar (1104 H St NE) is hosting its monthly whiskey tasting tonight, this time featuring single malt scotches from Dalwhinnie, Singleton and Lagavulin.
Perhaps it's this dreary weather that's putting us in the mood for an abstract image today, and christaki has come up with the goods. He cleverly combines his decaying subject's unusual color palette with careful framing – incorporating the artistic rule of thirds – to catch the viewer's eye.
Earlier this month, we told you about a new discount bus service that planned to start offering non-stop service from D.C. to Wilmington, Philadelphia and Boston. Originally, TransportAzumah planned to launch all of its new D.C. lines by today, but an ominous message has since appeared on the company's web site reporting that all trips from D.C. have been canceled until further notice. That's bad news for folks who had been hoping to take advantage of the new service for the holiday weekend.

"The reason that your services are cancelled is because a major ticketing agency has not paid us for the tickets that they have booked on our services. This caused a major service disruption over the weekend as over 200 people were stranded because of this. We have been attempting to maintain service in certain corridors, but things have been too chaotic here to manage," reads the message in part.

Owner Joel Azumah assured DCist that all tickets already bought and paid for will be refunded automatically, but if customers have trouble with their refunds, they should call 718-233-2550. Refunds will be handled in two stages, he said, with the ticket refunded first and the booking fee separately.

As for whether TransportAzumah will ever get its D.C.-based business off the ground, Azumah says they will, but he's still not sure when.

"There still is a lot of carnage and confusion going on," Azumah said, but "we will not stop this episode from making a go of it again. These markets are viable and we will get it done."

With hundreds of potential regular customers jilted this week, it remains to be seen whether any of them will be willing to give Azumah another shot.

Are the Redskins Actually Less Popular This Year?

The first paragraph of Reed Albergotti's Wall Street Journal story today about the decline in popularity of the Washington Redskins tells you pretty much all you need to know about what he thinks, at least of our city.

In a town drawn up by a Frenchman, a place brimming with people who hail from somewhere else and who don't agree about much of anything, the Washington Redskins managed to attain something any professional sports franchise would kill for: a giant fan base that loved them unconditionally.

Always nice to see that there's still some reporters who haven't hopped on the post-Obama "D.C. is great!" bandwagon.

From there, Albergotti goes on to call D.C. a "preposterous swamp," we can only assume because the L'Enfant bit was not enough of a cliché dig. In order to solidify an argument that the Redskins just aren't the draw that they once were, Albergotti highlights, among other slightly more legitimate points (like, you know, the fact the team has two playoff wins in the last ten years and tyrannical, profit-thirsty ownership): a Harris Interactive poll ranking nationwide popularity, John Riggins' occasional tirades, and the arrival of the Nationals four years ago.

That's right, the Washington Nationals are one of the reasons the popularity of the Redskins is suffering. We'll pause while you finish that hearty laugh. On the bright side, at least Albergotti didn't feel the need to spend 3,600 words on a reminder as to why the Redskins' name is offensive.

Despite the articles' many obvious flaws, the underlying question Albergotti is offering is legitimate, if difficult to answer accurately. To be sure, this season has featured one crappy moment after another. But one of Albergotti's few on-the-mark points is that 2009 has seemingly been the rock bottom of a mediocre-at-best, simply awful-at-worst decade for the Redskins. Any organization, sports or otherwise, would suffer from that kind of ten-year stretch; most, if not all businesses that experienced such repeated failures would have caved under the weight of poor public perception by now. That conclusion is what the article is missing – the dip in interest this season is not really an indicator that Washington is no longer a football town, but more a sign that the team's normally enthusiastic fans are finally hibernating, waiting for the sweet, sweet turnaround.
