Cupcakepocalypse @ Red Velvet Cupcakery/Tangysweet

It's been a little slower than normal in the free food department this summer. Perhaps the tight economy is to blame? Luckily, the folks at Tangysweet are opening up another Red Velvet Cupcakery at their DuPont Circle location. To celebrate, they will be giving out free red velvet mini-cupcakes starting at noon on Friday until closing, which is 1 a.m. on Fridays. The cupcake recipes were developed by pastry chef David Guas, known for his work at the Passion Food group of restaurants.

Obama, Gates & Crowley to Crack Open Some Brewskis

According to CNN's politicalticker blog, President Obama will meet this week with Officer James Crowley and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. over a beer to discuss the false home invasion arrest fiasco in Boston from last week. The beers chosen by each man? Budweiser for Obama, Blue Moon for Crowley, and undetermined for Gates (Gates may not even drink beer, as it turns out). Maybe Bud is Obama’s beer of choice, but being the president, it's probably safe to say that he had to pick 1) an American beer and 2) something most people have tried. Remember what happened when he told Iowa voters what arugula cost at the store? Right.

Kiko's Chicken Abruptly Closes, to be Replaced by Pollo Mio

2009_0713_kikos.jpg Relatively new Columbia Heights chicken carryout spot Kiko's Chicken has closed up shop, Prince of Petworth reports. The restaurant had only opened in March, but had kept odd and inconsistent operating hours, often closing at 8 p.m. on weeknights. For those who had a chance to try out Kiko's equally inconsistent online ordering service, their memorable/grating theme song, "I want to eat ... Kiko's right now!" will surely be missed. A message on the outgoing voicemail at Kiko's says that a new Peruvian-style chicken joint, to be called Pollo Mio, will soon take over the space.

In Stores Now: Summer Beers

There are two new big bottle standouts on beer shelves across D.C. this summer. The Lagunitas is a seasonal, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be the same batch this time next year. Track them down before they’re gone:

Last season, we were excited to see our hometown gal Carla Hall make it to the top three on Bravo's Top Chef. This year, we have three chefs with local ties to cheer for. First, we get some sibling rivalry between brothers Bryan and Michael Voltaggio. Will they pair up to take down the others or fight it out from the very start? Bryan is the chef-owner of Volt in Frederick, and was formerly at Charlie Palmer Steak. Michael now serves at the chef de cuisine at Jose Andres' Bazaar in Los Angeles. Rounding out the three is Mike Isabella, who is the executive chef at Zaytinya. One thing is for sure with this season. We'll have a good bunch to root for, and Jose Andres is going to be raking in some big money with all the publicity. Season 6 premieres Wednesday, August 26.

Is it wrong to expect an innovative brewery to have equally forward thinking alehouses? Because heading to the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Gaithersburg, MD, I was trying to think what kind of otherworldly experience it would be, coming from folks who turn out great beer like the 60-Minute IPA as well as interesting mixes like the Midas Touch. Would the menu continue fusions where the beer left off? Would the atmosphere push together styles that have never met?
