2007_0531_potd.jpg

Flickr user *ohad spent some time looking through the skeletal remains of Eastern Market recently, and came up with this unique perspective. Almost a little disorienting, but we like the way it makes your eyes search for just a second for the focus point. EXIF. Another good shot is here, and we have to agree with commenter {ryan} that *ohad has captured some kind of beauty in this mess.

This is one of those photos that pops up on the DCist photostream and screams, "Pick me! Pick me!" Or maybe it squealed and giggled, with the voices of all the little children whirring around at light speed. Flickr user epmd went out to Glen Echo Park to take this amusing photo at the Merry-Go-Round. EXIF.

Looks like lots of folks stuck around for the Memorial Day events in D.C. this weekend. There are some fantastic shots of Rolling Thunder celebrating their 20th anniversary, poingant images of families visiting their loved ones at Arlington Cemetery, and some more lighthearted shots like this one, of a sweet Model A Ford brought out by the Marines. Flickr user {ryan} describes them by how hard they were to shoot, the "chrome and paint gleaming everywhere and spectral highlights ... just exploding all over the place." EXIF.

Here's a fantastically colorful image to kick-off our long weekend. Flickr user firegal took a few shots of this boat filled with amusing glass art in, from her vantage point, what we assume is the Botanic Gardens (but we know you'll correct us in the comments if we're wrong). We're crossing our fingers our three days are filled with as much sunshine (and boats – there should be boats!) as this photo. EXIF.

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer
The descent into a holiday weekend always takes so long. Does anyone else wish it was Friday yet? I'm betting that many of you are taking tomorrow off, so today is your Friday. That said, is it happy hour yet? Samer Farha thinks so. His photo of Legacy's Hedonism Ale is a clarion call through the haze of the pre-Memorial Day rush on the Hill, the silence of a 3/4 empty government agency, or whatever TPS report the office types are working on. Samer Farha partook in this amber libation at RFD in Chinatown. Where are you heading today for your own frothy quaff? Hit up the comments and we'll be sure to check some out for upcoming 5 O'clock Meetings. EXIF.

PS: I'm aware that we used a similar photo from the same photographer for today's "About Tonight." I didn't notice until I was all finished with this. Take it as proof that DCist's editors are all really thirsty today, and can't wait to get our drink on. Can we have 4 beers?

Mindgutter brings us a stunning night-time HDR shot of a building on the UMD campus. Like DCist Heather, I'm a complete astrogeek, so the inclusion of the conjuction of the Moon and Venus is a total bonus. I also like that, if you look closely, you can see a security camera in the cupola. Big Brother -- and the Moon -- is always watching.

In the comments on the photo's Flickr page, Mindgutter asks what building this is on the UMD campus. He has marked Anne Arundel Hall on his flickr map, but it looks more like the Microbiology building to me. Are there any Terrapins out there -- past or present -- who would like to settle this? Hit the comments if you do.

Anyone thirsty? Today's Photo of the Day, a stream of water from a fireboat, comes to us from TheClayTaurus. Besides its vibrant colors, I like how you can see the fluid dynamics at work. Check out the large version for a good view of the water jet narrowing just after it leaves the nozzle. This also reminds us that the city best get working on its hydrants so we don't have any repeats of the Georgetown Library fiasco. EXIF

Instead of drooling over more astrophotograpy (you mean you missed this gorgeous sight on Saturday night?), let's bring the lens in a little and admire this shot by Flickr user Joshua Davis (articnomad). He stopped by the Joint Services Open House, an annual air show at Andrews Air Force base, and caught this guy, part of the U.S. Army's Golden Knight jump team, floating his way back to land. EXIF.

Thanks to WABA's Jeff Peel and Flickr contributor Intangible Arts for sharing a few of their shots of the Bike to Work Day rally in Freedom Plaza this morning. More photos below the fold: Top three by Jeff Peel, bottom two by Intangible Arts. Good luck biking home! Continue reading "Click Click: Bike to Work Day "

We've noticed Sexy Fitsum's candid party shots for awhile, a little bit in the vein of Misshapes, except, you know, classier and without all the dead-eyed stares behind frizzy mops of hair. This is an exceptional image, not just for the spot-on lighting, but for the perfect composition that puts action and personality into the shot even without the help of a facial expression. EXIF.

This seemed like the perfect light-hearted photo to get us through one more day until Friday. Flickr user zachstern has already proved his mastery with the infrared lens, but usually sticks to ethereal landscapes. This time he headed over to the zoo to capture the orangutans swinging madly in their Yeti get-ups. I have no idea what's trailing from his foot, but the whole image is a fantastic "what the heck is that??" EXIF.

Flickr user andertho caught these brilliant colors in a perfectly composed shot, as a group of teeny-tiny window washers scale a Crystal City building. Of course, it's the rebel with the green bucket on the right that really makes the photo. EXIF.

Oooh! This photo is actually from January, but was just added to the DCist pool yesterday (I have to wonder if philliefan_99 waited until I was back doing Photo of the Day, knowing what a sucker I am for astrophotography). He stood at the base of the Washington Monument to take this shot of Comet McNaught, the brightest comet most of us have seen in our lifetimes. So bright, in fact, that it was able to shine through the smog and light pollution that usually obscures views from city centers (but which contributed to the gorgeous orange sky). It's almost amazing to note this was only a 1/4 second exposure.

If we may take this moment to geek out a little, these late spring nights are the perfect time to step out for a little stargazing. On a warm, clear evening, you won't even need binoculars to pick out some amazing sights. Start by finding Venus in the western sky just after sunset, which will only be visible for a few more weeks, but should be easy to find sitting right next to the new moon in a few days. Saturn sits higher in the southwest sky in the middle of Leo, also coming close to the moon around May 22. Now turn around and look in the northeast for one of the brightest stars in the sky. Not just a movie star, this is Vega, one of the most prominent stars in the summer sky and a part of the constellation Lyra. Keep your eye on it over the next month and a half, because soon Vega forms part of the Summer Triangle, a great starting point for constellation hunting. Incidentally, we'll have the first blue moon this month since 2004, on May 31.

Admit it, you were kinda disappointed the first time you saw the Statue of Liberty and realized just how...small it is. We like how Flickr user Oblivious Dude used his soft focus and angle to give ol' Abe here the massiveness he deserves.

POTD_051107_gallery.jpg
It's Friday -- it's time to relax and interact with something other than a computer screen. Andertho's suberb shot reminds us that there is a cultural world out there waiting to be taken in -- and considering the rainy weekend we may have in store, isn't it high time you go visit that gallery that you have been meaning to for the last two three six months? EXIF.

potd_051007_pointing.jpg

A facial expression can say everything -- right? Well in this case, couple that with a dramatic point, and you have a complete story. We are sure it's something benign, but we'd like to think this photo is capturing a climatic moment in an international espionage mission in Georgetown over the weekend. Feel free to leave in the comments your interpretation of what was going on here. Photo taken by double agent Oblivious Dude. EXIF.

POTD_050907_hotdog.jpg
We were all set on running a lovely springtime photograph, when this photo popped into the DCist flickr pool and made us collectively gasp "OMG, WTF?" Coming to us straight from our neighbor to the north, The Skipping Hippy entitles this "Baltimore Kitsch." This photo leaves us thinking three things: Who does Mr. Dog's nails? How does he get so ripped? And should D.C.'s fine dog establishments consider seeking his services?. EXIF.

2007_0508_potd.jpg
This photo, taken by Zach Stern in digital infrared, has over 40 Flickr commentators proclaiming it to be everything from starkly beautiful to apocalyptically barren. We think the shot succeeds at being a bit of both -- and is particularly fascinating in full size (ever wanted to know what dandelion hair looks like?). EXIF data.

POTD_ducks_spring.jpg

Let's admit it- springtime brings out the fuzzy side of D.C., DCist and our DCist Flickr pool -- amidst the number of blooming flowers and cute animals photographs, Andertho's photo of ducklings in the Reflecting Pool caught our eye. Perhaps it's that two of the little fellas seem to be looking right at us and quizzicly (and identically) asking: "watcha doin' out there? come on in..." We'd join ya, but we happen to know firsthand what goes on in the Reflecting Pool. EXIF.

paths in the woods
You never know when the path you're on is going to veer to one side. The Skipping Hippy's photo of a boardwalk in a serene woodland illustrates this point nicely. I picked this one mostly for its perspective, but I also find the angle of the shadows attractive for some reason. The photo is of the Patuxent Research Refuge northeast of Washington, near Laurel, which will be holding celebrations in honor of Rachel Carson's 100th birthday later this month. Mark you calendars! EXIF.

bush motorcade
We're suckers for a good action photo. This one from Cary Scott Photography, shows one of Washington's infamous motorcades flying up our streets. And--ahem--we as voteless taxpayers of the District pay for that security. This photo also reminds us that some high-ranking folks are visiting us! Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of England are touching down in Richmond this afternoon, and will be coming to Washington as part of their trip. Curiously, Her Majesty has only visited the United States under Republican presidents: Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43, according to Wikipedia. We wonder why. Do Republicans make better hosts? Maybe the party is secretly trying to re-enlist our nation as part of the Commonwealth? Any other guesses?

scooby doo dancer
Today's a perfect day for street dancing, isn't it? It's sunny, in the 70s, and people seem to be in pretty good moods as a result. This character, captured two years ago by a nameless yeast embodies the emotion we hope everyone can muster on such a nice day. Though the photo is a little bit of a dig into our archives for Photo of the Day, one just can't argue with that Scooby Doo t-shirt. The addition of the weightlifting belt is a bold statement, but is gilding the lily just a tad, don't you think? EXIF.

Dale Chihuly Boat at Botanic Gardens
Happy May Day, Washington! Though you may be celebrating it as International Workers' Day, I grew up seeing it as a marker that the winter's last frost was behind us and a long, lazy summer lay ahead. Eye Captain's photo of the Botanical Garden's "Sunset Boat" by Dale Chihuly strikes me as particularly springtime-y. Has everyone taken a stroll through the new outdoor space at BoGa? Pop across the street to the newly refurbished Bartholdi Park for a treat as well. EXIF.
