Virginia state GOP Chair Jeff Frederick |
After losing its two seats in the U.S. Senate, the governor’s office and even a House seat in a conservative-leaning district, you’d think the Virginia GOP would want to watch its words, re-think its electoral strategy and consider new leadership. Apparently, it’s not doing any of the above.
Via the Post’s Virginia Politics blog, we find that state GOP Chair Jeff Frederick — you might remember him for equating Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden — recently sent out a fundraising request in which he tries to scare Virginia Republicans into throwing money at their sinking ship of a party by warning of an impending “radical shift” in U.S. politics. Writes the Post:
Frederick then goes on to accuse Obama of wanting “massive new taxes and generous giveaways to his supporters,” a 25 percent cut in the military budget, to divert the bailout money to ACORN, extend “welfare for millions who already pay no taxes,” and give “welfare and drivers licenses for illegal aliens – with voting rights soon to follow.”
In another inflammatory barb, Frederick says Obama will push for voting rights for the District of Columbia and council member Marion Barry will become a United States senator.
As fear-mongering goes, we suppose bringing up illegal aliens, a huge welfare state and increased taxes are effective pitches for Republicans. But Senator Marion Barry? Is that what “real” Virginia has to be afraid of?
Memo to the Virginia GOP: the fact that you’ve lost major races in the last eight years to Democrats means that it might be time to re-tool the party strategy and message. And maybe dump Jeff Frederick…
