One aspect of the inauguration is shaping up in a way that’s bound to please beleaguered police officers and neighborhood wet blankets. Eighteenth Street NW has reached an agreement with the rest of Adams Morgan that will only marginally extend bar hours in the neighborhood where bar patronage is bound to be the highest over the week. Fritz and the Gurus have the deets:
Bars will close at the usual time of 3 a.m. for the nights of Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th. On Sunday and Monday, they’ll be allowed to stay open an extra hour and close at 3 a.m. And on Tuesday, inauguration day, they’ll keep partying until 4 a.m. instead of the usual 2 a.m.
A number of establishments that you might not really think of as bars are liable to stay up past closing time, primarily restaurants.
Elsewhere in D.C., the story’s basically the same. Restaurants not bound by voluntary agreements are liable to stay open, but bars operating under voluntary agreements will not be. There are some exceptions, of course. See the map from blogger Capital Spice to find the one in your area. Note the abundance of red flags (denoting restaurants) .
One bar owner on U Street NW told your correspondent that after the headache of Election Day night, he didn’t want to keep serving after 4 p.m. — except to friends of the bar and patrons who come in regularly. If you’re thinking about extending your evening, you might consider making sure you show up before 2 a.m. regardless of what time the bar (or neighborhood commission) lists for last call.
