A Metro press release has identified the man who was struck and killed by a Blue Line train yesterday at McPherson Square. Kurtland Johnson, 42, of Washington, DC, reportedly stepped in front of the train around shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday, according to witnesses.

Metro’s release paints a potentially sad picture: Johnson had been a Metrobus driver since September of 2008, but recently was placed on administrative leave after a bus he was driving was involved in an accident on March 6. Johnson had been driving the N8 bus that day, when an automobile made contact with the bus after attempting to pass at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Van Ness Street NW. No police charges were filed in the accident, but it is Metro’s policy to place bus drivers who are involved in accidents on administrative leave until an investigation of the incident can be completed.

Johnson’s death is currently being investigated by Metro Transit Police Department and the District of Columbia Medical Examiner’s Office. We’ll have more details as that investigation unfurl.
