Photo by (anne)We mentioned it briefly in the roundup, but it’s worth repeating yesterday’s announcement from the White House of the creation of a new internship program aimed specifically at D.C. public high school students. According to the Post, the D.C. Scholars Program will place students in “part-time, unpaid positions in White House offices and departments this summer.” Not exactly a Charlie Young level of opportunity, but extraordinary nonetheless.
“When I was running for President, I pledged to open up the White House to the American people in new ways and Michelle has made a particular effort to reach out to the Washington D.C. community,” President Obama said in a statement announcing the program. “Now, for the first time, there will be a special place for D.C. students to learn about public service at the White House, while furthering their educational goals.”
To apply, interested students must be 18 years old by June 22 and currently enrolled in a D.C. public high school. The application requires two letters of recommendation and two 300-to-500 word essays. More details and the application can be found at www.whitehouse.gov/about/Internships, and applications must be received by April 30. The internships will run from June 22 to August 14.
