The man who was shot and killed while trying to board a Metrobus near 14th and H Streets NE this morning was George Rawlings, the brother of DeOnté Rawlings, according to the Washington Post. DeOnté Rawlings was 14 when he was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer in 2007.
George Rawlings, 21, was killed today reportedly as he was leaving a funeral service for another young man, who was shot to death on Halloween. An attorney for the Rawlings family told the Post that George had been in hiding since the Halloween shooting, to which he was an apparent witness, because he knew he was being targeted. And there’s this devastating quote from the attorney, Gregory Lattimore:
“When the thought of going to the police was mentioned, this is a situation where DeOnté was killed by the police . . . so how could [George] go to the police and expect them to legitimately try to help him? That was his thinking,” Lattimore said.
D.C. police now say they are looking for three suspects in today’s shooting.
