Sabres 3, Capitals 0: Three-hundred and thirty-three days. That’s how long it took for another NHL team to hold the Capitals without a goal in a regular season game. Buffalo’s Ryan Miller broke that particularly impressive streak, making 35 saves — including an incredible glove save on Brendan Morrison in the third — to hand Washington their first loss since November 23. If it was going to be anyone, it was likely to be Miller, who not only leads the league in goals against average and save percentage, but also is the keystone to a very tight Buffalo defense which has only allowed 62 goals in 27 games. Washington’s situation in goal, meanwhile, was significantly more scattered. Jose Theodore started after Semyon Varlamov picked up a “lower body injury” in Tampa on Tuesday night. The veteran’s performance paled in comparison to Miller, though. Theodore allowed two soft goals — one off a big rebound to Henrik Tallinder and Nathan Gerbe’s wrister which squeaked through his pads — so it’s a good thing that Varlamov is expected to return for Friday night’s game against division-rival Carolina.
