What’s with all the pit bull shootings lately? The Washington Post is reporting that an officer with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority fatally shot two pit bulls at Dulles International Airport earlier today. One of the dogs reportedly got loose from its kennel and attacked the other, and after officers were unable to break up the fight with pepper spray, they ended up shooting them. Police are investigating the incident.

On a related note, I only noticed when I started writing this post that a couple commenters were asking questions about why I included the breed of the dog in the headline of my earlier report about an MPD officer shooting a pit bull after an attack in Cleveland Park. Apparently noting that the dog was a pit bull was somehow “breedist,” I’m guessing because there’s a sense in the pit bull-enthusiast community that the breed is unfairly maligned. That might well be the case, and I’m honestly not that much of a dog person, so maybe I’m not as sensitive about this stuff as I could be. But I think I’m going to let qbert’s response stand in for my thought process on this matter:

I’m pretty sure if the cops put down a cocker spaniel the breed would’ve been noted in the headline.

Indeed, it would have.
