I’m not sure if any of you caught yesterday afternoon’s NFL wild card game between the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals on NBC. But if you did, you may have noticed that the two color commentators joining play-by-play man Tom Hammond were none other than Redskins legends Joe Theismann and Joe Gibbs. Hail to the Redskins, and all that, right? Well, in keeping with the performance the team had on the field this season, the two were, uh, not good at all. The New York Times’ Richard Sandomir does the best job of summarizing this booth wreck. Some highlights: “Gibbs…did not know that you stop talking when the referee is announcing a call or the broadcast is going to a break…Theismann poses a potential airtime threat to any partner…On Saturday, he regularly interrupted Gibbs and finished some of his sentences. A couple of times, he stepped into Hammond’s play-by-play…there was a distinct lopsidedness to Theismann’s and Gibbs’s contributions. Theismann spoke 149 times during the game, taking up 28 minutes 31 seconds of airtime. Gibbs’s 83 moments of airtime added up to 15:24.” Don’t quit your day jobs, fellas. (Wait, this is Theismann’s day job? Oy.)
