Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Ut.)Via the Salt Lake Tribune, the AP is reporting that Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Ut.) is planning on introducing legislation that would put same-sex marriage on the D.C. ballot. This isn’t much of a surprise. Chaffetz has long warned that he’d try just about anything to head off same-sex marriage in the District, while also admitting that his chances for success were slim.
The 30-day congressional review period for the legislation started last week and is likely to last through early March, during which Chaffetz and other opponents of marriage equality can and will try to stop the measure from becoming law. In the meantime, a court has yet to rule on an appeal filed by Bishop Harry Jackson contesting the most recent decision by the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics prohibiting a vote on same-sex marriage, while two more requests for votes have been filed. And what if the board’s decision is upheld and Chaffetz gets his measure through? Easy! Congress supersedes the District. Ahh, Home Rule.
