Suspended Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to two years of probation today after pleading guilty to felony gun possession earlier this year.
Despite penning a serious-minded Washington Post op-ed admitting that the incident that brought him to this point — bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room last December — was wrong, Arenas has also continued to maintain that he ought not be sent to jail because his actions were merely a reflection of his off-beat sense of humor. D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin ended up agreeing that Arenas’ actions weren’t worth jail time, although the NBA player will also spend 30 days in a halfway house, pay $5000 to a fund for victims of gun violence, perform 400 hours of community service, and register as gun offender, under the sentence.
From WTOP’s Mark Segraves:
“You have demonstrated genuine remorse and you’re basically a good person,” Morin told Arenas.
Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office had recommended a three month jail sentence. The court’s probation office and Arenas’ defense attorneys recommended probation.
Agent Zero’s future in the NBA is still an open question. He’s been suspended for the rest of the season, but still has six years remaining on his $111 million contract with the Washington Wizards. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is currently negotiating to purchase the Wizards, and if he’s successful, the decision may well end up being his.
