Happy 4/20, Washington! The D.C. Council voted unanimously this afternoon in favor of a bill that legalizes medical marijuana inside the District of Columbia.
The legislation passed without debate Tuesday on a first reading. A second and final vote is expected next month.
The version of the bill that passed today allows chronically ill patients to receive a doctor’s permission to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana in a given month (or up to 2.5 ounces at the mayor’s discretion). Between five and eight medical pot distribution centers would be allowed to open inside the District, with the caveat that they may not be located within 300 feet of any school or youth center. Patients would not be permitted to grow their own marijuana at home.
